Gauging interest in Optical Drive Development

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum and new to the world of optical drive back ups but I am not new to the world of product development.

I'm checking in with the community here to see if there is interest in developing a LibreDrive and UHD compatible drive. I am leaning towards basing the design off of either the Pioneer BDR-XS06 model or the Pioneer BDR-XS07TUHD model. If I base the design off of the BDR-XS06 model, the external enclosure would be an aftermarket Aluminum Magnesium enclosure identical to the XS06/XS07 and it would have a genuine Pioneer BDR-UD04 internal drive. I would request that this drive is flashed at the factory level with the SDFTool to make it UHD and LibreDrive compatible out of the box. I'm located in the USA so this optical drive would be imported for the purpose of being sold and shipped here.

Constructive feedback would be most appreciated.

I’m not surprised. Which model did you ask them about? Out of the top five models you would like to see reproduced, how does the Pioneer BDR-XS07TUHD model rank for you?

See this post by asmcom. Pioneer sold their optical drive business to Shanxi Lightchain, so you'd need to contact Shanxi Lightchain, not Pioneer. They've told asmcom that they'd be willing to restart production, if someone offers to buy 50,000 units.

50000 drives is an insane number. Just estimate the value in stock at several millions of Dollars! And they would collect a lot of dust until they are all sold. My guess would be 10000 at the most but that number is likely too low to motivate a production batch.

I think there will be a new batch or units in production eventually to meet global demand, but for now they are probably waiting to let the current stock sell out or when it gets low they will start limited production cycle again. The sad part is it will probably be LG units only because I think that the third-party resellers like Asus etc are out. They just have not said anything about it, why the did reselling in the first place I don't know.

I also suspect that we are looking at slim-drives only, that is probably the largest market now for optical drives. So many people use tablets, phones, laptops and the old desktop is gone. Only gamers use desktop PCs, heck even dell, hp, lenovo have moved on to smaller laptop like computers. They do have some tower computers but I guess that is also a niche market now. If you need heavy computer power for tasks they do it on on server farms now, in local location like the basement (server room) or at remote server farms.
