Using this drive on a mac mini m4, I was unable to read BluRay discs using MakeMKV.

Here are the drive specs: https://www.buffalo.jp/product/detail/b ... -bk_n.html

Since MakeMKV reported that LibreDrive was possible but not enabled, I tried flashing it.

Code: Select all

$ /Applications/MakeMKV.app/Contents/MacOS/sdftool -l
Found 1 drives(s)
DEBUG: code=00000000 src=|;#LqoJ6PV#w!yqdM,8vQ0]dc:29395149
DEBUG: code=00000000 src=|;#LqoJ6PV#w!yqdM,8vQ0]dc:29395149
00: /IOBDServices/86AE8945
  BUFFALO_Optical_Drive_1.03_211810241934_MO5KCS83746

$ ./makemkvcon f -d /IOBDServices/86AE8945 -f sdf.bin rawflash enc -i /Users/me/Downloads/All\ You\ Need\ Firmware\ Pack\ \(MartyMcNuts\)/Slim\ External\ Drives/DE_Buffalo_BRUHD-PU3_BN12-MK.bin
However, this doesn't seem to have worked. I can mount a BluRay disc and the volume name appears in the Finder, but MakeMKV just gets stuck and reports a series of Scsi Errors 'NOT READY'.

Is the drive bricked? If not, what is the correct firmware I should use?

TIA !

Power issue?
Try a high powered USB hub 35+watts

I was wondering about that. Forgot to mention there is a LED on the rear top of the drive that flashes green slowly during mount, and then flashes red.

Is that an indication there isn't enough power?

EDIT: I tried a separate hub connected to a single USB-C port and now the LED on the rear doesn't flash but I get a series of errors like this:

Code: Select all

Error 'OS error - (ipc/send) invalid destination port' occurred while reading 'BD-RE BUFFALO Optical Drive 1.03 MO5KCS83746' at offset '1245184'.

yes red means not enough power

Thanks. I tried two different powered hubs, but I still get "invalid destination port" errors from MakeMKV.

I think I must have eff'd up the flashing step.

For this drive, is the DE_Buffalo_BRUHD-PU3_BN12-MK.bin firmware the correct one to use?

Whatever hub used must have it's own AC power source, not be powered from USB port and as Billy said, be at least 35W.

That firmware should work but most people just go with BU40N 1.03-MK.

Thanks. I'll try again with a different powered hub and report back.

Is there some functional difference (i.e., higher speed) between BR drives need two USB cables vs. drives that only need one?

No functional differences. I think it's just that some enclosures/PCB in the enclosure require more power than others.
