LG WH16NS40 Won't Read 4K Disc in MakeMKV

Post by Voicetek »

Hello all!

This is my first post, and I was hoping to get some help/advice with my current drive and the ripping of 4K discs.

So I've got the LG WH16NS40, and it was manufactured in January 2015. It's currently running firmware version 1.02.

When running MakeMKV, it shows that the Libre Drive mode is "Enabled," however, when I load a 4K disc, it tries to scan, then says "No Disc". When I put in a standard Blu-ray disc, it scans and detects the disc just fine. I'm not sure why It's not able to read and detect a 4K disc. Does anyone have any info or advice? Is my current drive even a UHD friendly drive? I was under the impression that it was, but maybe it's been manufactured too early?

Any advice would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Yes, it does say MT 1939. Dang.

Now after trying it in just file explorer, the drive does nothing. It won't even read a disc now. I'm wondering if it died.

Oh well, I guess it's time to update the drive. It's pretty old.

Thanks for the info!

Yes I flashed it, but it was with firmware from LG. It was running version 1.0, so I thought maybe I'd flash a newer version. So I tried 1.02 and 1.03. neither worked, and then it quit responding. So.. oh well lol.

Anyway, I bought a new drive. Same model number. It was manufactured in 2023, but has firmware version 1.05. From my understanding, LG removed the ability to recognize 4K discs with version 1.03 and above.

So here's a new question, is there a way to downgrade the firmware to 1.02? I haven't installed the drive yet, but I suspect it's a newer platform since it was manufactured so recently.

Thanks for the help!
