if it reads DVD and CD, the red laser works. If it does NOT read BD or UHD, the blue(ish) laser is not functioning, which means the drive is bad.

Hey there.
I also buyed the WH16NS60, flashing the patched 1.3 worked fine, but the drive reads like crap, only one UHD movie out of 6 was read flawless, one wasn't even recognized.

Do you still have the original firmware? Since my drive is new, I think, it's just faulty, but I didn't think about backing up the firmware, before flashing the patched one. I don't want to send it back with the patched firmware, or is that something to not care about? The original flasher from LG only tells me, that version 1.3 it higher is already installed and does nothing.

they dont care if you send it back with different firmware they dont check 99% of the time
if you want to put it back to stock just use the official lg updater

Thank you for your reply.
Well, the LG updater doesn't do anything, as I said. Amazon most likely will destroy it anyways. Fun thing: It was sent from the US to Germany and now I have to send it back to the US, Amazon paying

Now I'm curious, how many drives are defective from the beginning? Are UHD drives that fragile? I want to get a Pioneer UHD external USB drive next, is the return rate as high as for the other drives?

for me 25% of the desktop asus and LG drives were bad.
the BU40N has failure rate of 1%-2% for me and its really not the drive that fails its the cheap case usb port most of the time cant wait till they come out with a USB c version

Hey, I just wanted to thank Billycar11, the LG is on its way back to the seller and I got myself a BDR-XD07TUHD, which works great, though it's loud. Maybe I try another internal LG or maybe Asus in the future for watching movies direct from disc and to have an alternative, should the Pioneer have trouble reading a disc.

And also sorry for hijacking this thread :D

The pioneers are way quieter than any of the lg or Asus's so they you think that's loud the others would be unbearable

Well, the WH16NS60 wasn't that loud, especially inside a PC case with a front door and sound insulation, though louder than my old BDR-209EBK, which is really silent, yes. The external BDR-XD07TUHD on the other side is more like a hair dryer...

I am running a pair of WH14NS40 drives and both have stopped detecting discs, occasionally. One has done it more than the other.

The fix has been to shut off the PC. Rebooting will not correct this issue. I shut the power off for a few seconds and everything comes back properly.

I do not believe this is a hardware error.
