Help flashing WH16NS60

Post by grandpixel »

I purchased Archgon 9.5mm drive, discovered it's actually a LG BU40N, tried the GUI flash tool, didn't work - don't remember why, tried makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes etc, flashed successfully to 1.00, shows in MakeMKV as LibreDrive, etc.. all is well, ripping 4K discs for days.

So I ordered a couple of WH16NS60 for a different machine. Default firmware is 1.03. Using the same method as above, but with "enc" option, I'm trying to flash to "HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600-212005081010.bin" but it gives me an error.

Code: Select all

PS C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV> .\makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d D: rawflash enc -i .\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600-212005081010.bin

Reading input file .\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600-212005081010.bin
Flashing flags = 0x0 : 0 0 0 0 : ---- ---- ---- ----
Sending image in encrypted format
Current Drive ID: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__WH16NS60_1.03_212005081010_KLFL5BG5428
Ready to write drive flash memory. (auto confirmed)
Operation started: Sending flash image to drive

Write DRAM NG 02/3A/01

Command produced error code 0x8f023a01
PS C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV>
Here is the info from MakeMKV on the drive.

Code: Select all

OS device name: D:

Maybe I'm blind but I've looked all over the forum for the MK firmware and all I can find is:

HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600-212005081010.bin
HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin
DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.00.bin

Where do I get WH16NS60-1.02-MK.bin?

The firmware now is the factory 1.03. I can go to 1.02 MK without going to 1.03 MK?

Should I go to 1.00 after?

How is the drive connected to PC? Is the drive tray empty and closed?
Cheers :D

Yes, drive is empty and closed. Connected internally via SATA. Going to email Billy and see if he can help.

Soo, I mentioned I have 2 new WH16NS60 drives. I just tried the other one and it worked fine to 1.02MK. I still need to figure out what's wrong with the first one.

(should I flash the one from 1.02MK to 1.00 now?)

If you only use MakeMKV for ripping, leave it on 1.02-MK. If you use other software, such as DVDFab, flash it to 1.00.

I mean, I'd like it to function as a normal drive otherwise.

The first drive still won't take a flash, even using Billy's script. Is there a tool to recover a drive? I'm not sure if it's actually "bricked". I've been using it to rip HD blu-rays.

well it still could be a few different things the drive is defective and wont take a flash i have seen that 1 time before.
the sata port is on does not support flashing some 3rd party sata controllers dont.
or its a new sub revision 1.03 i do notice a 10:10 after your fw that does not look familiar ill look in so some of my remote flash logs to see if i have others like that.

i would try swapping the sata port next with the drive you were able to flash.

First drive: haven't attempted swapping SATA ports yet.

Second drive: flashed to 1.02, and says it successfully flashed to 1.00, but still reporting 1.02 < now this is strange

Code: Select all

C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV>makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d G: rawflash enc -i DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.00.bin

Reading input file DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.00.bin

Drive 1: Swapping SATA ports fixed the problem. Flashed to 1.02.

Neither drive will flash to 1.00. It says "Programming flash - 100% Operation finished - Done successfully" but still showing 1.02. Well at least I can keep ripping now. Any ideas on getting to 1.00?

Remove enc from command as the firmware is no longer encrypted.
