hmm im not 100% sure its really just a idea.
you could go with the owc one
not 100% sure it will fix your issue
you might want to try in boot camp to rule the case out as a problem

Ok, I'll get back once I try. Do you know why makemkv.com is being blocked? All I get is a page in Russian.

With the server down is there somewhere else I can get the sdf.bin file? Is it the same as when I extract appdata.tar and find the sdf_0000007e.bin? Can I use that instead of sdf.bin?

The only .tar file I have is appdata.tar in the resources folder. if I extract it I get sdf_0000007e.bin, can I use that instead of sdf.bin in my command line flash using the makemkv flasher?

yeah just rename it to sdf.bin and put it in the makemkv data directory open makemkv if it disappears it worked then try to flash

So it worked! I extracted the appdata.tar file to get the sdf_0000007e.bin file, moved it my desktop and renamed it sdf.bin. I used that in the command line to flash the WH16NS60 1.02 MK firmware on my Mac without using boot camp. I wonder if since the makemkv.com site is down it was not able to get the sdf.bin file right. Who knows. I have yet to test it on a UHD disc, only regular bluray, but makemkv says it is Libre drive enabled and that it is a WH16NS60 running 1.02.

So now I can use the same method, without the ENC part since it is no longer encrypted, to put on DE firmware from WH16NS60 or WH16NS40 if I wish. Correct?

you could but not reason and WH16ns40 is worse firmware

Apologies for bumping an old thread, but I wanted to post a full set of instructions for someone looking to flash a drive on MacOS X:

Start by navigating to the MakeMKV application

Code: Select all

cd /Applications/MakeMKV.app/Contents/MacOS
Get the latest SDF file; write it to the local directory (you can also write it to your home directory or someplace more convenient)

Code: Select all

curl -O "https://makemkv.com/sdf.bin"
Find the drive identifiers

Code: Select all

./makemkvcon f --list
Look for your drive. You should see something like this (in this example, I have two drives attached, each with a disc in; as the first post in the thread points out, though, the /dev/rdisk* won't work):

Code: Select all

Found 2 drives(s)
00: /IOBDServices/65961856, /dev/rdisk2, /dev/rdisk2
  PIONEER_BD-RW___BDR-212U_1.00_SFDL000221WL

01: /IOBDServices/C01417F1, /dev/rdisk5, /dev/rdisk5
  HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__WH16NS60_1.03_212005081010_KLFK7LA5541
I was looking to flash the WH16NS60, and I had downloaded the latest MK firmware pack, so:

Code: Select all

./makemkvcon f -d /IOBDServices/C01417F1 -f sdf.bin rawflash main,enc -i ~/Downloads/mk-firmware-pack-20200720/MK/HL-DT-ST/WH16NS60/HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600-212005081010.bin
Note that I needed to use enc because the 1.03 firmware is encrypted; leave that off if your current firmware is unencrypted.

After doing this, and turning my drive off and on just in case, I was able to rip from a UHD disc. (And, for faster reads: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=93341 )
Hi; I'm trying to follow these steps for flashing my LG UHD drive in Mac os, but how do I see if the firmware is encrypted?- think I've read somewhere, that firmware with the date within 2020 is encrypted, thus mine is not encrypted, or what ??

Big Thanks to MacOS (and a deep, deep bow to mike admin!) I successfully flashed my slim device Buffalo (manufactur. date: 2019.10.30 from https://conrad.de in MacOS High Sierra with Libre Drive enabled Firmware HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-BN12-0M01001-211905141415.bin.

Before I got this new slim Buffalo, I tried devices from ASUS and Verbatim (all slim). The Buffalo with LibreDrive Firmware rips my Test BD with 4.2 - 4.6x  vs. the 1.8 - 2.0x  with ASUS and Verbatim. Really satisfying!

It took quiet some time to understand sdftool and SDF.bin and fiddle with all aspects of command line, drives and flashing in MacOS.

What I did:
  • Put the right firmware in home directory
  • Extraction of sdf_0000006d.bin to my home directory

    Code: Select all

    cp /Applications/MakeMKV.app/Contents/Resources/appdata.tar ~
    tar -xvf appdata.tar sdf_0000006d.bin
  • Gathering name of device (as User MacOS showed us). In my case there is a good old internal RPC1 (thx2 XVI!) DVD Apple SuperDrive in first order, the second one is the Buffalo

    Code: Select all

    /Applications/MakeMKV.app/Contents/MacOS/makemkvcon f -l
    00: IODVDServices:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-8A8 HA13
      MATSHITA_DVD-R___UJ-8A8_HA13_K83

    01: IOBDServices:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:BUFFALO Optical Drive BN12
      BUFFALO_Optical_Drive_BN12_211905141415_MO1J93A2324
  • Now, Flashing...
Sending flash image to drive took a few seconds, programming flash was about 30 sec

    Code: Select all

    /Applications/MakeMKV.app/Contents/MacOS/makemkvcon f -d 'IOBDServices:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:BUFFALO Optical Drive BN12' -f sdf_0000006d.bin rawflash main -i HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-BN12-0M01001-211905141415.bin

    Reading input file HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-BN12-0M01001-211905141415.bin
    Flashing flags = 0x0 : 0 0 0 0 : ---- ---- ---- ----
Ready to write drive flash memory.
Type "yes" to continue, "no" to abort
    yes
Operation started: Sending flash image to drive
     100% Operation finished
    Operation started: Programming flash
     100% Operation finished
    Done successfully
Unfortunately, I was not able to figure out, how to flash the drive with the "drive-id". I tried it several times but to no avail.

PLEASE continue your amazing work and contributions (mike admin and all of you out there) & please users register makemkv, so this thing goes on!

I have gone through the terminal process trying to flash the firmware on the Archgon and gotten all the way to the end, with it telling me 100% Operation finished Done Successfully. Yet, when I launch MakeMKV the drive still shows the original firmware and cannot rip UHD discs. I am incredibly puzzled.
