I'm nervous about buying a late 2015 LG drive - Need help deciding if I should get it

Post by hesanka » Sun Apr 20, 2025 6:16 pm

I have an offer to buy a LG WH14NS40 that was manufactured in November 2015. The label on it says ROM version 1.00, and I also have the S/N for it. Is it possible to know if it supports 4K without physically having it? It's on offer for 40$.
Thanks!

You need to ensure the WH14NS40 has SVC NS50. Before you buy, check that:
  • Manufactured after Oct 2015
  • Label on the drive says SVC NS50 (beneath the serial number / barcode)
If it says SVC NS40 it is no good.
Cheers :D

Great, so I can confirm the drive was manufactured after October 2015 (it was manufactured November 2015) and it indeed stated SVC NS50.

The guy selling it had another identical driver, so I got both for 80$. Unused in the box, since 2015.

I've just received both drives, both are SVC NS40, both ROM VER. 1.00.
I'll plug one of the drives in today and see how it does.

MADE A MISTAKE!! Bad typo as they both are NS50... Currently don't have any 4K discs laying around, but out of the box MakeMKV says LibreDrive enabled, with original 1.00 ROM firmware. Does that mean it's 4K friendly?

If they say SVC NS50 on the label and MakeMKV shows the MT1959 drive platform, then yes, they should be UHD compatible as is.

Great, because that is the case. I'll try to get a 4k disc soon and update.
Thank you very much!
