As mentioned by CmdrKodi here: viewtopic.php?p=189071#p189071
Pioneer BDR-212Us on firmware 1.04 are broken with MakeMKV currently, and I do not mean the lack of UHD support. I also have a BDR-212U on the same firmware and am experiencing the exact same symptoms as Kodi had (see next paragraph). Turning on verbose output for a firmware dump attempt didn't show anything useful.
The OS is able to mount BDs successfully, but MakeMKV just scans the drive forever (or if you get into the menu with a disc not inserted, it does populate the disc information, but if you put a disc in it the loading icon just spins forever).
I noted in the thread where Kodi reported the issue that I also have it, but figured this deserved its own topic.

Re: Pioneer BDR-212Us on 1.04 are broken in MakeMKV
For the problem of 1.17.6/7+ not working with a non-LibreDrive (on Linux), the best workaround is probably the sdf_Stop setting. See e.g. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=41692
Your drive happen to have firmware that is not (considered as) LibreDrive. Somehow only 1.01 and 1.02 of the ID83 variant are currently supported, while all 1.00-1.05 of the ID58 variant are: viewtopic.php?p=79712#p79712.
P.S. I wonder if it's actually very easy to get it supported. I'm not sure what exactly mike needs and what should one do to get support of a firmware added though.
