I recently upgraded my Linux Mint 22.1 system (kernel 6.8 installed) to Mint 22.2 (kernel 6.14). Had some issues that I wanted to report on just in case it's useful to others.
Basically what would happen is that MakeMKV would detect the "failed" drives just fine, but then as soon as a disc was inserted, MakeMKV would hang with just the green light and spinning disc animation. Or if MakeMKV was started while a disc was inserted in one of those drives, then the bus scan would hang. This would occur even at the command line when --noscan was specified (MakeMKV seems to not honor that option).
Linux would detect the volume name of the inserted volume though and that volume name would be visible to commands like lsblk -f, so it looks like commands to /dev/srX worked but MakeMKV was doing something with /dev/sgX that those drives didn't like.
Drives in system:
sr0: Pioneer BDR-212D Blu-ray (via SATA) --> Works
sr1: Asus DRW-24B1ST DVD (via JMicron JMS-578 USB Bridge) --> Works
sr2: Piodata DVR-221D DVD (via JMicron JMS-567 USB Bridge) --> Works
sr3: Pioneer BDR-212V flashed to BDR-S12U (via Asmedia 1153E or similar bridge) --> Works
sr4: Pioneer BDR-212V with original 212V firmware (via Asmedia 1153E or similar bridge) --> Failed
sr5: Pioneer BDR-S06XLB (reported as BDR-206) (via Asmedia 1153E or similar bridge) --> Failed
sr6: Pioneer BDR-S09XLB flashed to BDR-S11 (via Asmedia 1153E or similar bridge) --> Works
sr7: Asus BW-16D1HT flashed to MK firmware (via Asmedia 1153E or similar bridge) --> Works
I tried swapping the drives onto the known working USB adapters and even the SATA port and no luck - the problem persisted. I *was* able to flash the one 212V drive to the S12U firmware, after which it started working. Figuring I had nothing to lose, I flashed the S06 drive with the latest official Pioneer firmware, still didn't work, even on the SATA port.
It would be nice to salvage the S06 drive as these drives are extremely expensive now. I know UHD can't be enabled via crossflash but maybe there is another model it can be crossflashed to?
