Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION' occurred

Post by drknight71 »

Hi,

Never had an issue with this BH16NS40 before but was trying to archive an old dvd and got this error message:

Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION' occurred while reading 'BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH16NS40 1.03 K94E1P82739' at offset '1048576'

The files seemed to in the end be successfully decoded but not sure what this scsi error is all about?

Thanks

This seems to happen occasionally with DVDs (vs blu ray discs). I'm guessing it essentially has to do with some code paths in makemkv that try to read from the disc before the drive has been unlocked.

Tried it on another DVD drive (a Liteon drive) as opposed to my trusty bluray drive and got the same scsi error.

Have seen powering down the PC with the offending drive(s) can clear scsi errors. Not rebooting but turning off the PC and also turning the power off at the wall for 30 plus seconds. Might not apply here, but you never know.
