Any advice for ripping UHD with Orico ext drive?

Post by RVG1963 »

Wow! Have I ever gotten myself lost down a rabbit hole! And boy do I feel dumb. I hope I'm in the correct forum.

Trying to rip an BRD (no indication it is UHD/4K) with this drive:

ORICO External Blu-Ray DVD CD Drive, 100GB Portable 6X Ultra HD Bluray Burner for Laptop Mac MacBook PC Windows10 Support M-disc-BRGU3-01. Purchased November 2023. I'm using a MacBook Pro (2023 with M3 chip, macOS 15)

When I attempt to rip, I get this info:

Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/rdisk4
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: FR07
Serial number: ...
Firmware date: 2119-05-10 13:48
Bus encryption flags: 1F
Highest AACS version: 81

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

Disc Information
Label: "movie_title"
Timestamp: 2022-05-21 12:21:02
Protection: AACS v76
Data capacity: 41.53 Gb
Disc type: BD-ROM
Number of layers: 2
Channel bit length: 74,5 nm (25.0 GB max. per layer)

I'm only seeing MakeMKV/LibreDrive/flashing info for Pioneer, LG, ASUS, and Verbatim...

All the "Special Features" ripped, but not the feature film. I've ripped hundreds of discs with many different region codes. Given the above info, any ideas what's going on? Thanks!
(I do not believe the disc is damaged, but...?)

The drive inside is a LG BU40N. It should work just fine as is for DVD and standard Blu-Ray discs but would need to be flashed to enable LibreDrive and UHD compatibility.

Are you doing a complete disc to folder backup or just wanting to rip the movie to a MKV file?

You should also show us what the log window says.
Cheers :D

Hi, thanks for the quick response. I've just been ripping my dvd and blu-ray discs (movies and some of the extras) to MKV format so I can get rid of all my physical media. Wanna move across the country and don't want to pay to haul and store it all. I only have a few UHD/4K discs that I will keep since it seems they are more tricky to rip (although I would be interested in getting my drive flashed for the functionality, "just in case...").

So, where do I find the logs that indicate why this particular blu-ray disc will not copy. I'm trying it again right now, so I can submit the latest one shortly.

Thanks again for the assistance, Bob of Ohio.

The log is the bottom pane of MakeMKV.

Again, thanks for the quick reply.

IT MAY BE WORTH NOTING: After I was unsuccessful in ripping my own copy of this blu-ray dvd, I borrowed an identical disc and the same thing happened - that being, I was able to rip the Special Features, but not the Main Feature. Could a "higher level" copy guard have been placed on the Main Feature by the disc manufacturer?

Anyway, after loading the disc and activating MakeMKV, this following information appeared.

MakeMKV v1.17.8 darwin(arm64-release) started
Optical drive "BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU40N FR07 MODM4FG0746d" opened in OS access mode.
Using direct disc access mode
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.
File 00001.mpls was added as title #0
File 00010.m2ts was added as title #1
File 00011.m2ts was added as title #2
File 00003.m2ts was added as title #3
File 00009.m2ts was added as title #4
File 00008.m2ts was added as title #5
File 00021.m2ts was added as title #6
File 00007.m2ts was added as title #7
File 00006.m2ts was added as title #8
File 00004.m2ts was added as title #9
File 00012.m2ts was added as title #10
Operation successfully completed
Saving 1 titles into directory /Users/robertgibson/Desktop

Then, I only selected the main feature to rip. (As previously mentioned, I was able to successfully rip the Special Features into MKV files.)

Main Feature info:

Title information
Source file name: 00001.mpls
Duration: 1:38:11
Chapters count: 12
Size: 28.4 GB
Segment count: 1
Segment map: 5
File name: title_t00.mkv

After MakeMKV ran for about an hour or so, this is what appeared in the dialogue box/log indicating a failure to read that particular file from the disc:

SO, I messed around in the MakeMKV preference settings (not knowing what I was doing or trying to accomplish), tried running it again and got the following error/failure messages:

The "makemkv.com/errors/read" link states that it can only be a damaged disc or a failing drive, but disc does play in a Panasonic UHD 4K blu-ray/dvd/cd player and my Orico ext drive still seems to be working fine.

Therefore, I'm completely stumped and out of my league.
What thinks you?

The "makemkv.com/errors/read" link states that it can only be a damaged disc or a failing drive, but disc does play in a Panasonic UHD 4K blu-ray/dvd/cd player and my Orico ext drive still seems to be working fine.

Therefore, I'm completely stumped and out of my league.
What thinks you?
Thanks, Bob of Ohio
Playing is totally different to reading. Apples to Oranges.

When ripping, the data must be read successfully bit by bit exact. Players will simply buffer and skip over any data errors. You may or may not notice any sort of quick glitch when watching it. Anyway, obviously the drive is having a hard time reading a section of the disc causing it to fail. Probably a scratch or dust or something. You could try giving it a good clean and see if that helps.
Cheers :D

I looking forward a Orico drive. Amazon Germany has a special offer from Orico with 50 % discount. I'm curious how the BU40N works with the Orico enclosure.

Arrived and tested. The BU40N in the Archgon, Techpulse and Buffalo enclosures are better processed and more valuable imo, but it does what it's supposed to do.

I've another Orico here. The same from Amazon Germany. This time it contains a BU50N.

This could be, I couldn't find specific differences between this two drives. E.g. on ebay you can find the BU50N with or without HP branding, same with the BU40N.

But downgrade to BU50N 1.00 works and the drive runs with MakeMKV and DVDFab.
