Pioneer BDR-XD04 Bluray Drive
I just got my hands on a used Pioneer BDR-XD04 Bluray Drive. This from MakeMKV
Drive platform: Pioneer RS8130
Firmware version: GENE
What do I have to do to get it to work with MakeMKV?
Please give me simple complete step by step directions how to do this (no telling me to put something in a dump somewhere without telling me exactly where to get the something and where the dump is). I have ADHD and need simple complete directions to do anything.

Re: Pioneer BDR-XD04 Bluray Drive
This drive can't be made UHD capable.
Post your Makemkv info if Libredrive is enabled. That#s as good as it gets for BD discs.

What is the obsession with UHD on these forums? I'm not asking about UHD; I only care about DVD and BD.
What info are you looking for? I thought I already had?

Well, UHD is the best of the best and is what most people purchase these days.Lady Fitzgerald wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 1:03 amWhat is the obsession with UHD on these forums? I'm not asking about UHD; I only care about DVD and BD.

You want to know how to get the drive to work with MakeMKV, huh? Try plugging the bloody thing in, insert a disc then open up MakeMKV. There you go.
Cheers

Try to understand my frustration before making smartalec answers. In this thread (viewtopic.php?p=187050#p187050), I had bought two similar newer drives based on the comment in this thread saying they would work, then when they didn't work, sent them back while I could still get a refund. After that, when they were no longer available, it posted that I should have done certain things but the directions were too vague for me to follow. I didn't follow up because I had already returned what were apparently were the last two of those drives in the world and they were gone forever.
When, when I asked about how to get this one, a BD and DVD drive, working the response I got was it wasn't a UDH drive, which wasn't what I asked about (I'm sick and tired of asking questions and people responding with "answers" that have nothing to do with what I asked or leave out vital steps because they assume they are common knowledge everyone knows). Then, when I responded with a request for simple, complete, step by step directions and why I need them, I get your vague, sarcastic response. Small wonder I'm frustrated!
I'm asking again for simple, complete, step by step directions to get this thing working.
Re: Pioneer BDR-XD04 Bluray Drive
OMG! You are all fired up!
First thing is: Start Makemkv w/o a disc. Copy and paste what is shown on the right side as Makemkv info. Is Libredrive enabled? Can you post it?
To process a DVD or BD Makemkv doesn't "just give up". If you want the content as folders you have to click the second icon in the top line. If you want to save as MKV files you need to click the big optical drive icon.

BTW, I've ripped at least a thousand DVDs and maybe one or two hundred BDs using MakeMKV on Pioneer ODDs so methinks I just might know how to do it.

Re: Pioneer BDR-XD04 Bluray Drive
Either the laser is dead or the lens is polluted. Clean the lens with a cotton swab an alcohol. Dry with another cotton swab. Try again. Various discs. If unsuccessful you have a new door stop.Lady Fitzgerald wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 5:19 pmWith the drive door open:

Re: Pioneer BDR-XD04 Bluray Drive
Even though they looked clean, I had already cleaned both with a 70% alcohol swab and dried it using the small air blower (not canned "air") I use for blowing dust out my computers.
On the odd chance my copy of MakeMKV had gone bad, I fired up a known good ODD and got this:
Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr0
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Product: BD-RW BDR-XD07
Revision: 1.02
Serial number: SJDL005523UC
Firmware date: 2019-09-05
Bus encryption flags: 13
Highest AACS version: 81
LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: RS8D30
Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-BDS7
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.02
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes
No disc inserted
It is also able to recognize the BD I was using.

Re: Pioneer BDR-XD04 Bluray Drive
So what is your conclusion? Mine is the laser of the other drive is dead. BTW - the XD07 can be flashed to read UHDs - but you don't seem to be interested.

Re: Pioneer BDR-XD04 Bluray Drive
The "laser" in my "doorstop" (I see two lenses in all my ODDs suggesting two lasers, which makes sense since CDs and DVDs use a different light wavelength than BD) used for DVDs and CDs is apparently OK because I was just able rip a track from a music CD just fine (albeit slowly since the connection is USB 2.0), which leads me to believe there is a firmware or software issue.
BTW, again, what is the obsession with UHD? Ripped BD files are already huge enough and rarely do I see a significant improvement between them and ripped DVDs (the exception being Disney animated moves made since around the turn of the century). Sure, I could shrink the size using Handbrake but, besides taking hours to run, I end up with a similar resolution as what I get from DVD or BD. I bought one UHD multipack to test ripping the UHD disk with a UHD drive I have. It was rippable but I terminated it because it was too resource demanding on the high end laptop I was using at the time and the CPU temperature skyrocketed (I ripped and kept the DVD instead). The only time I buy BDs (other than Disney animated movies) is when a BD is the only way to get the movie or the movie is too long for DVD, such as Amadeus, one of the Robinhood movies (I forget which one), or The Pelican Files).
Re: Pioneer BDR-XD04 Bluray Drive
To rule out the software, try the free version of XReveal.
Regarding UHD you don't get it and so I will stop talking about UHDs. Some people just don't care to have the best picture and sound.

Re: Pioneer BDR-XD04 Bluray Drive
Unfortunately, XReveal is a Windows application and I'm running Liniux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon.
Methinks you don't understand. First, you (and a lot of other people so you aren't alone) don't seem to understand that good enough is often simply good enough. Why buy an enormous 4 wheel drive, crew cab pickup truck capable of hauling five tons or more of cargo when only one person (and no dog) will be in it all the time and haul, at most, a week's worth of groceries on smooth city streets?
I watch my movies on a 43" 1920 x 1080 TV with my eyes 9 feet away from the screen. Also, the video cards in my computers—desktop and laptops—put out only 1920 x 1080. If I can't see or just barely see the difference between DVD quality and BD quality (most of the time), why even bother with UHD that costs more and takes up an obscene amount of space on a drive? I'm a retiree on a so called fixed income so, unless someone wants to buy me a larger, higher resolution TV and a larger home to put it in, UHD is simply not worth it for me.
Re: Pioneer BDR-XD04 Bluray Drive
Install a VM like VMWare to try if you can't be convinced otherwise that this drive is history.Lady Fitzgerald wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 7:42 pmUnfortunately, XReveal is a Windows application and I'm running Liniux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon.

I have a 65" UHD OLED and a 5.1.4 audio system. You miss a lot but you also need to appreciate that and have the funds for it. OK?

Anyway, it's a 13+ year old drive. I'd be suprised if it stil works. You really shouldn't buy used drives. There's generally a (bad) reason why people are getting rid of their old used drives.
Try cleaning the discs and cleaning the lasers and trying other ripping software. If you can't use Xreveal, try DVDFab. Other than that, if it doesn't work throw it in the bin.
Cheers
