MakeMKV won't even open DVD on Buffalo BRXL-PUS6U3B

Post by Woody »

Had a deal on a BRXL-PUS6U3B, so I thought I'd grab one to try and rip some Blu-rays while I searched for a better UHD-capable drive.

I thought LibreDrive was just for UHD's so if I'm wrong I'll apologize and spend the holidays reading the guide.

To clarify, I have the BRXL-PUS6U3B attached to my Ubuntu laptop with two cables attached to the Sabrent USB 3.0 10 port hub.
The USB hub is obviously plugged in. The BRXL-PUS6U3B is attached to the hub via a) the included USB cable and b) the USB to barrel jack connector. The LED on top of the BRXL-PUS6U3B is flashing red, but the manual states that the LED may blink red even if it is getting enough power. EDIT: powered everything down and back up again. LED is now a solid green but still no go on opening DVD or Blu-ray.

If I insert a Blu-ray, MakeMKV will have the drive seeking but will not open it. Again, to clarify does LibreDrive need to be enabled for Blu-rays or is that just for UHD?

Thinking that it may need to be enabled for Blu-rays as well, I decided to toss a DVD in the drive. The DVD would not open in MakeMKV - just seeking noise - but it did mount as a DVD in the file manager and it was playable via SMPlayer.

Running under Ubuntu and just upgraded to MakeMKV 1.18.2.

Thanks for any advice on why MakeMKV isn't even opening a DVD and whether I need LibreDrive enabled for even Blu-rays.

MakeMKV Drive info:

Device: /dev/sr1
Manufacturer: Buffalo
Revision: BN14
Firmware date: 2121-06-21 13:33
Bus Encryption flags: 1F
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

Thanks. I'll hit the guide. Are there tools to do this in Ubuntu or do I need to dig up a Windows machine?
