Verbatim 43888 BU40N randomly stopping

Post by Mattt »

I just got a Verbatim 43888 from Amazon EU today, it has the BU40N internals which I flashed using the guide+GUI tool to 1.03, I’m ripping my second disk now but I keep having to baby sit the device as it seemingly randomly stops reading and spins down/stops.. MKV just sits and waits, bizarrely I found that opening my web browser wakes the device up and it carries on reading from where it left off.
I have tried disabling all power saving in windows but that has not made any difference.
Any ideas on what could be causing this would be much appreciated as I’d like to be able to do other things and not baby sit the drive/MakeMKV continuously.
many thanks!!

The enclosure electronics is very power hungry. Best connect ot USB-C or a powered USB hub.

Make sure "disabling all power saving in windows" includes the USB selective suspend setting:

Edit Power Plan -> Change advanced power settings -> USB settings -> USB selective suspend setting

Third possible solution: Buy an USB-Y-Power-Cable with USB-C-to-2x-USB-A.
Make sure "disabling all power saving in windows" includes the USB selective suspend setting:

Edit Power Plan -> Change advanced power settings -> USB settings -> USB selective suspend setting
I've adviced this also in the past but in relation to the specific disc it couldn't be enough. With 2-layer 4k disc the disabled power settings could be sufficient but not with 3-layer discs. Usually these need more power.

The issue is resolved!

Thank you all for your thoughts and advice!

They helped me focus on what I suspected the issue was (power related, software or hardware)

I had already got all the ‘hidden’ usb power settings but had forgotten Asus Armoury Crate.
Also, I found, of the 3 usb-c outlets on my motherboard only one of the rear ones seems to be full bandwidth/60w, of course I’d picked the wrong one.

I’m using a 3m usb-c to usb-c 60w cable and am blazing my way through my 4k collection now.

Many thanks to you all!

interesting observation. i too am using Asus Desktop PC, with "Armoury Crate" installed.
is there any settings in the Armoury Crate" that you changed?
would be great if you could share more on what settings was changed for all to be aware off.
thanks in advance.

Welp, I feel a little dumb, it would appear I’d not updated the app in a very long time, there used to be a ‘Power Saving’ panel which is not there any more since I updated the other day.
There are some references I found via google suggesting the app could be problematic.
Let’s leave the advice as
‘if you have this issue, ensure all apps and drivers are up to date and you power cycle your pc and disk drive before seeking further help’ :)

Verbatim 43888 BU40N randomly stopping

Post by Mattt »

Sadly I have not fixed this issue :(
It happens when reading any type of disk including while trying to install old games from disks (CD and DVD), while ripping music cds using WMP and still while backing up my 4k UHDs.
I tried regedit to slow down the read speed, it did slow down the read speed but the issue still happens.
I am currently baby sitting a UHD and I have to open/close my web browser every 5 seconds or so to keep it going, seems to run for the length of time it takes all the tabs to load mostly but sometimes less or more, also went through all bios settings with no success.
Any more ideas would be appreciated, I have not got a powered usb yet as I assume the speed regedit rules out power issue?

I find it very odd that it is specifically web browsers, (Edge or OperaGX I have installed) not steam or explorer or anything else I’ve tried so far that pull it out of its frozen/waiting/chilling/sleep/annoying state

The problem happens on all types of media/data/disk and on MKV even if the speed is set low ie “0=8” which I assume eliminates the chances of it being a power draw issue?
