Which Drive should i buy? Pls Help :(

Post by dekuna »

Hello together.

Im new in the "business". I red a lot of posts in this forum but im still very confused. I want to rip some of my Blu-rays and DVDs to my Plex Server.

At the moment, I have no drive. I want to buy one wehere i can rip Blu-rays and DVDs and (if its possible) UHD Disk. But my priority is Blu-rays and DVDs.

I understand the "technical" part about LibreDrives but im not shure if one of this Drive's work for ripping Blu-rays and DVDs.

Now I'm not sure witch drive i should buy.

I did some research and cam up with this two:

ASUS BW-16D1H-U PRO:
https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/as ... es-7195548

Verbatim Slimline:
https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/ve ... s-10936185

or should I buy another Drive?

Thx

If your reading brought you to the ASUS BW-16D1H-U PRO, you're reading the wrong places. This drive is not capable of doing BDXL, let alone UHD. It will work well for DVD and BD, though.

Might I recommend the 1st post of Ultimate UHD Drives Guide Updated 2020 ?

Specifically, the "Recommended UHD Drives to get:" section. All will do DVD/BR/UHD.

Hey Woodstock
Thx for your quick respons.

Ok after reading more Posts im just more confused :/

I would like to use an external Drive.

Lets lower my goals down to just use the Drive "out of the box" for ripping Blu-rays and DVDs. Can I use one of these "out of the box"?

Verbatim Slimline:

ASUS BW-16D1H-U PRO:

LG BP55EB40:
https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/lg ... ds=614-653

Thx for your help.

Hey dekuna. I've used the LG drive you mention for DVD and Bluray and have done around 500+ movies onto my Plex. Other than a possible hardware failure recently, it's been fine. I suspect the failure has been due to constant use whilst I've been archiving my collection.

For UHD, I seriously doubt that any drive from anywhere can be used out of the box. They all need to be flashed to allow UHD ripping. As per previous comments, if you are interested in UHD at all, then the ASUS BW-16D1H-U PRO is a no go, as it will never be UHD capable. I am not sure about the verbatim drive but I believe the LG BP55EB40 can be flashed to work with UHD.
Cheers :D

I know it was but I just couldn't help myself. Plus I hold the copyright to the phrase "works right out of the box", or is it the trademark? It's not the patent I know that! The domain name absolutely but it's turns out no one has the patience to type in www.worksrightoutofthebox.com! :)
