Failure #4 when flashing Asus BW-16D1HT 3.10 to 3.10(MK) on Mac

Post by RJson »

I’m going crazy here. I downloaded all the tools and firmwares, I followed all the guides, and still I keep getting “Updating failure #4” and the tray ejects when I use the modified Asus flasher.

It’s a brand new BW-16D1HT/BLK/G/AS, manufactured March 2020. MakeMKV (OS X) reports the following:

Drive Information
Manufacturer: ASUS
Product: BW-16D1HT
Revision: 3.10
Serial number: KLMK3RJ****
Firmware date: 2119-01-04 10:14
Bus encryption flags: 1F
Highest AACS version: 76

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible (with patched firmware)
Drive platform: MT1959
Harware support: Yes
Firmware support: No
Firmware type: Original (patched version available)
Firmware version: 3.10
DVD all regions: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw data read: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw metadata read: Possible (with patched firmware)
Unrestricted read speed: Possible (with patched firmware)

I use the modified Asus flasher “(Modified) ASUS ODD FW Changer (24.08.2019) + UHD Friendly Firmwares + Latest MK Pack” and the 3.10 MK bin (“ASUS-BW-16D1HT-3.10-WM01601-211901041014.bin”). The drive is connected using a USB3-to-SATA adapter (DeLock 61882). Also tried with the drive mounted in an Icy Box IB-550 enclosure with same result.

I run the flasher from a Win10 x64 Home running in a VirtualBox on my Mac (MacOS 10.15.4). The Asus drive SATA port is set to “Passthrough”.

MakeMKV in the VM sees the drive as:

Drive Information
OS device name: D:
Manufacturer: VBOX
Product: CD-ROM
Revision: 1.0
Serial number: KLMK3RJ****
Firmware date: 2119-01-04 10:14
Bus encryption flags: 1F

I’ve used this setup some time ago to downgrade an older drive (same model) from 3.03 to 3.02 without problems (with the older flasher). Can it be some new Asus mischief in the newer drives (march 2020), or have I missed something obvious?

That's my suspicion as well. However, I previoulsy used VirtualBox to run the old Asus downgrade tool from MacOS on an older drive, using this guide: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 051#p71511

Does anyone know if something has changed in either VirtualBox on MacOS or with the flasher tools' compatibility with VM port virtualization? Has anybody used the modified flasher in VM with success?

No idk what they changed the only one that has worked reliably for me is VM Ware all the others seem to like to pass a fake drive through. But your best bet is to just make a bootable USB windows and do it that way.

Okay. I'll try to find someone with Windows. That's probably easier than making a bootable Windows USB work on a Mac.

Thanks for your answers.

You can use sdftool (built in into MakeMKV) to flash natively from Mac OS, providing you don't mind command line. Search this subforum for details.

p.s. On Mac OS the easiest to use "drive id" as an argument for "-d", this is the second line printed below crazy IoKit drive identifiers.

Wow! It worked beautifully!

I ran this command:

Code: Select all

/Applications/MakeMKV.app/Contents/MacOS/makemkvcon f -d 'ASUS_BW-16D1HT_3.10_211901041014_KLMK3RJ**** -f sdf_00000069.bin rawflash main -i ASUS-BW-16D1HT-3.10-WM01601-211901041014.bin
And now MakeMKV reports:
Drive Information
Manufacturer: ASUS
Product: BW-16D1HT
Revision: 3.10
Serial number: KLMK3RJ2316
Firmware date: 2119-01-04 10:14
Bus encryption flags: 1F
Highest AACS version: 76

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)
Firmware version: 3.10
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Possible, not yet enabled
Thank you very much for your time, both of you.

I'm having this same problem, but with windows! It's driving me crazy! I just purchased an LG wh16ns60 and I get the Failure #4 and the tray pops out. Anyone know what I might be doing wrong or should I just return the drive?

I have the same issue on a drive just received today, running 3.10 firmware.

Please advise if possible.

Thank you.

UPDATE: 1:22pm... I was able to install the 3.10 from the MK folder on Windows PC.

I had this problem too. But after installing the 3.11 version from the MK\ASUS\BC-12D2HT folder, I could successfully install the 3.00 version from the root folder... and lo and behold, suddenly the drive is able to read my UHD disc! :D :D :D
