As Billy advised, pay attention to the pinned posts and guides at the top of each forum. You need to do your part and Read. They provide helpful information and answers to these common answers.

@Billycar11
In you response to this thread you indicated to download and use WH16NS60 1.02 mk. I asked a similar question and your response in that thread (https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... oha#p85883) was to use 1.00 because "... we recommend 1.00 because of the wider ripper compatibility that's all." Yet, here your are recommending 1.02MK, IMO this leads to confusion as newbies are trying (maybe struggling) to do this and one way says to do it with version 1.02MK, while another way says to do it with DE (Downgrade Enable) version 1.00. No wonder there are so many questions being asked about the correct way the flashing of a optical drive is to be done.
I know the OP was asking about their WH14NS40 drive so to clarify:
The LG WH14NS40 optical drive can burn at a max speed of 14x
The LG WH16NS40 optical drive can burn at a max speed of 16x
So, it appears LG drives use the 14 or 16 to indicate max burn speed. Other than that the drives appear to be identical.
Getting back...
Why the confusion? Well to me it's because there is no simple explanation as to why one version should be used over another. I have flashed my WH16NS40 drives (over 5 - not a lot to many but to me it's a lot as most people don't have more than 2 or 3 drives - and yes, I'll be getting more) to both variants of the firmware. Both worked without issues (IE: read and burned without problems) or the sleep bug. Here goes with my simplified explanation...
The DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.00.bin file (from (Modified) ASUS ODD FW Changer (24.08.2019) + UHD Friendly Firmwares + Latest MK Pack.zip) allows the WH14NS40/WH16NS40 drive to be crossed flashed as a WH16NS60 drive. The .bin is an actual 1.00 version bin with no modifications except for the DE (Downgrade Enabled) flag set to true so that drives with a higher firmware revision can be flashed to the 1.00 version firmware. After flashing with a WH16NS60 - 1.00 firmware the optical drive will work with all software (ANYDrive, DVDFab, etc.) as if the actual WH16NS60 optical drive was actually installed.
The HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin file (from mk-firmware-pack-20200214.zip) allows the WH14NS40/WH16NS40 drive to be crossed flashed as a WH16NS60 version 1.02 drive. The .bin is a patched 1.02 WH16NS60 version bin. After flashing with a WH16NS60 - 1.02 firmware, the optical drive will only work with MAKEMKV (per my research thus far) and other software will request using "their" variant of a firmware in order to work correctly. Unknown if "their" firmware variant will work with MakeMKV or if "they" charge for "their" firmware variant.
@tfunk002
Have you already attempted flashing you drive? If not, you might want to consider doing the following:
Make a backup of the current firmware on the drive. How? Well that was answered by mike admin in response to a post I made (https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... ool#p85397) asking about reverting back to "original firmware" if desired. mike admin stated the command line version of MakeMKV has a secret tool and to use that tool to safely (VERY VERY important!) read /save a drives firmware. Using info from another post regarding the sdftool I experimented with one of my WH16NS40 - SVC:NS50 drives and it worked without a problem.
ONCE AGAIN!!!!.....
To all reader that are reading this...
NOTE: This worked for me and me alone. NO GUARANTEE IT WILL WORK FOR YOU.
That stated a few notes:
Open a command window (does not need to open as administrator) in the same folder a MakeMKV (typically: C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV).
Then:
Here is how to use the sdftool that is built in to MakeMKS. Use makemkvcon for 32bit and makemkvcon64 for 64bit depending on your Windows 32/64 bit OS.
From the command line issue the following commands (Example show below presume 64bit system):
1. makemkvcon64.exe f --help (Help file for ALL sdftool commands)
2. makemkvcon64.exe f -l (list all optical drives)
3. makemkvcon64.exe f -d E: dump auto -o C:\path (Example: C:\Users\UserName\Downloads)
Where:
-d = drive name
E: = drive letter of optical drive to be used
dump = dump specified drive's firmware
-o = specify output path for location the ROM dump file
path = actual path where generated ROM as a TAR file will be saved
Further help with specific options:
dump [auto|full|user] dumps firmware image
dump full - dumps full rom image (if not disabled in firmware)
dump user - dumps non-volatile user data
dump auto - dumps full image if possible, user data otherwise
rawflash [main|full|<flags>] sends the image and flashing flags to drive
for flashing in self-update mode
rawflash main - flashes main firmware (this is the default)
rawflash full - flashes boot loader and main firmware (caution!!!)
Steps 01-05 are STRONGLY recommended/suggested if you are using a "virgin" drive in order to be able to flash back to its original state. If the drive has been flashed and the "Original" firmware is forever lost start with instruction # 06.
I would do the following:
01. Open command window
02. Change to folder where MakeMKV is located
03. makemkvcon(64).exe f -d E: dump auto -o C:\path (Example: C:\Users\UserName\Downloads)
(see above "Here is how to use the sdftool that is built in to MakeMKS" whether to use 32/64 bit .exe)
04. Exit/Close the command window
05. Copy the dumped firmware to a safe location (external thumbdrive, NAS, etc) as a backup! NEVER DELETE THIS FILE!
Recommended - watch Billcar11's video on how to use the "BH14NS40_N1.00-A4_patched.exe" application
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfpf6HoMMis skip to 0:42 to see how to load .bin file and how to execute flashing
06. Execute "BH14NS40_N1.00-A4_patched.exe" (found in "Downgrade Enabled Firmware V.2.zip" file)
07. Select the "DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.00.bin" or "HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin" firmware file (see above for explanation of each file and respective file location)
08. Flash the optical drive WH14NS40/WH16NS40 SVC:NS50 (make sure antivirus, screen saver, etc. are temp disabled so as to not interrupt flash proceedure)
09. HOLD BREATH!
10. Reboot when requested.
11. Confirm desired flashed firmware version using MakeMKV
12. If confirmed, do happy dance!
If you have already flashed your drive to 1.02MK, then you might want to consider re-flashing to 1.00 for a more "compatible"/"wider ripper compatibility" (see above) drive.
Hope this helps all that read this post.

Re: WH14NS40
1.00 vs 1.02mk... if you're on a version of a firmware that requires an mk version in order to downgrade, then 1.02mk is going to be recommended. If you're on a version of a firmware that allows straight downgrading or cross flashing, 1.00 is going to be recommended. It's really that simple.
