Re: LibreDrive for Pioneer drives

Post by audiotechnica »

I have these two Pioneer UHD drives. A BDR-211UBK and a BDR-212UBK. The BDR-211UBK will not rip 4K discs, it errors out with "Can't read AACS VID from disc". The BDR-212UBK on the other hand rips all the 4K discs the BDR-211UBK won't rip. The highest seen AACS version on both drives is v60. Both drives have 2023 firmware so I'm puzzled why one works and the other one doesn't. Both drives were purchased brand new from B&H years ago in retail boxes, they're not Chinese recases. It looks like LibreDrive is not working on the BDR-211UBK even though MakeMKV says it's enabled? Is this a MakeMKV bug?

I also tried the same 4K discs on a BDR-209DBK crossflashed to a BDR-211M and a brand new Asus BW-16D1X-U crossflashed to the BW-16D1HT v3.10 firmware and they rip just fine as well. I emailed the .tgz file that MakeMKV created on the BDR-211UBK to svq@makemkv.com for analysis.

MakeMKV for the BDR-211UBK:

Code: Select all

    Drive Information
    OS device name: E:
    Manufacturer: PIONEER
    Product: BD-RW BDR-211M
    Revision: 1.54
    Serial number: QHDL004326WL
    Firmware date: 2023-02-08
    Bus encryption flags: 13
    Highest AACS version: 60

    LibreDrive Information
    Status: Enabled
    Drive platform: RS8800
    Firmware name: PIONEER BDR-211

    Firmware version: 1.54/ID60
    DVD all regions: Yes
    BD raw data read: Yes
    BD raw metadata read: Yes

MakeMKV info for the BDR-212UBK:

Code: Select all

    Drive Information
    OS device name: F:
    Manufacturer: PIONEER
    Product: BD-RW BDR-212U
    Revision: 1.05
    Serial number: AGDL002378WL
    Firmware date: 2023-08-01
    Bus encryption flags: 1B
    Highest AACS version: 60

    LibreDrive Information
    Status: Enabled

Here's an example of a disc that the BDR-211UBK won't rip:

You likely have a HK download issue
Go to the UHD disc section and use the keydb

If I had a key download issue, then how come three other drives work with all those 4K discs, and just the BDR-211UBK doesn't?

I put the latest keydb.cfg in the MakeMKV data directory but that did nothing.

Still getting "LibreDrive compatible drive is required to open this disc - video can't be decrypted."

I did more testing. I connected the BDR-211UBK drive via SATA and LibreDrive works fine now.

So leaving this post up for those who have the same problem.

Really bizarre that I have three other drives (2x Pioneer, 1x Asus) that work fine in three different USB enclosures.

Only this BDR-211UBK refuses to run in LibreDrive mode over USB (connected directly to computer, no hubs), but it works over SATA.

I'll do more testing and try different USB ports, too. This is so weird.

Hello,
This does not surprise me. Not all the SATA/USB interface chips are born equal and some function are not working or marginally so. I bet that the chip in your case is somewhat not speaking correctly to the computer and the optical drive... Remember these chips are "intelligent" and stuffed with software...

Sure, but what's weird is that I've tried three different enclosures with four different drives.

Only one drive doesn't like being on USB and it doesn't matter which USB enclosure it's in.

The other three drives work perfectly fine in all three USB enclosures.
