I'm nervous about buying a late 2015 LG drive - Need help deciding if I should get it
I have an offer to buy a LG WH14NS40 that was manufactured in November 2015. The label on it says ROM version 1.00, and I also have the S/N for it. Is it possible to know if it supports 4K without physically having it? It's on offer for 40$.
Thanks!
Thanks!

You need to ensure the WH14NS40 has SVC NS50. Before you buy, check that:
- Manufactured after Oct 2015
- Label on the drive says SVC NS50 (beneath the serial number / barcode)

Great, so I can confirm the drive was manufactured after October 2015 (it was manufactured November 2015) and it indeed stated SVC NS50.
The guy selling it had another identical driver, so I got both for 80$. Unused in the box, since 2015.

I've just received both drives, both are SVC NS40, both ROM VER. 1.00.MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Mon Apr 21, 2025 12:37 amYou need to ensure the WH14NS40 has SVC NS50. Before you buy, check that:

If it says SVC NS40 it is no good.
- Label on the drive says SVC NS50 (beneath the serial number / barcode)
I'll plug one of the drives in today and see how it does.

MADE A MISTAKE!! Bad typo as they both are NS50... Currently don't have any 4K discs laying around, but out of the box MakeMKV says LibreDrive enabled, with original 1.00 ROM firmware. Does that mean it's 4K friendly?Billycar11 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 12:26 pmDon't you will kill themhesanka wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 7:42 amI've just received both drives, both are SVC NS40, both ROM VER. 1.00.MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Mon Apr 21, 2025 12:37 am

If they say SVC NS50 on the label and MakeMKV shows the MT1959 drive platform, then yes, they should be UHD compatible as is.hesanka wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 8:27 pmMADE A MISTAKE!! Great, because that is the case. I'll try to get a 4k disc soon and update.MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Wed Apr 23, 2025 12:45 amIf they say SVC NS50 on the label and MakeMKV shows the MT1959 drive platform, then yes, they should be UHD compatible as is.

So without any firmware changes, and a stock 1.00 ROM, it reads UHD. It's quite slow in ripping but it reads out of the box and that's the point.hesanka wrote: ↑Wed Apr 23, 2025 8:47 amGreat, because that is the case. Should read UHD discs at 4x-6x speed. That's normal. The fastest speed UHD can be read is 8x which is on WH16NS60 1.02-MK firmware but they don't really stay at that speed for long. The one good thing about flashing to WH16NS60 1.02-MK firmware is that it does remove the sleep bug.hesanka wrote: ↑Mon Apr 28, 2025 12:16 pmSo without any firmware changes, and a stock 1.00 ROM, it reads UHD. Re: I'm nervous about buying a late 2015 LG drive - Need help deciding if I should get it
So I've ripped a couple UHD and a few HD discs so far. The average I get is 50~60 minutes for UHD (Labyrinth and War Dogs sample test) and 30~40 minutes for HD. It seems to be faster than any other benchmarks I've seen here. But also one of the drives I bought did not cooperate at all with UHD ripping, and the other one works miracles.MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Tue Apr 29, 2025 12:38 amShould read UHD discs at 4x-6x speed. Some details:

I've seen the drive getting to 30~33 M/s [~7.0x] in some rips.
This is a Lottery Ticket bluray rip benchmark:
23.9GB in ~20 minutes.

And a Parental Guidance benchmark:
31.3GB in ~27 minutes.

Jeff Who Lives At Home benchmark:
~20.2GB in ~10 minutes.

Couples Retreat benchmark:
43.4GB in ~35 minutes:

That's pretty standard for blu-ray discs.hesanka wrote: ↑Tue Apr 29, 2025 2:46 pmSome details:

UHD discs should rip at 4x-6x. Usually around 45 mins for 2 layer discs and around 1hr-1hr20m for 3 layer discs.
