TL;DR
I bought a Verbatim HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU40N UHD Blu-ray drive (USB-C, 4K) but it can’t play UHD videos or rip UHD discs. It works for CDs but isn’t LibreDrive-compatible. Can I downgrade the firmware to fix this? I’m stuck with it and unsure about returns.
From what I gathered the full name + product marketing is as followed: "Verbatim HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU40N 1.05 MO2P2FG5225" (Ultra HD 4K External Slimline Blu-Ray Writer USB 3.2 Gen 1 with USB-C Connection) and this is my first brand new UHD drive I bought a week ago arrived yesterday and I plugged it in my desktop PC with its USB-C adapter. And it works great at ripping CDs with EAC but can't play the videos or music directly through File Explorer or even VLC (media player) nor is it directly compatible with LibreDrive (as MakeMKV reports in failure and in specs) but MakeMKV recognizes it (anyway as a drive). I mainly bought it cause an AI conversation I had told me it would be compatible. That was my first mistake. And my second was ever doubting youtube videos or forum posts. But maybe that's just me being lazy and eager to rip UHD.... I didn't get any forums just skimmed through Reddit a bit, and so I might've been misinformed by AI massively. It was really stupid on my part! I mainly bought it cause it had USB-C and a excellent price for me, and would've been compatible for UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, CD playing but ripping for UHD is out of the picture?... no but literally?
I haven't seen many or any top posts regarding 'Verbatim' UHD drives, but was mentioned I bet. And really I don't have the means to buy a diff drive and so I'm stuck with this prob. I hope I can flash it (I have no idea what crossflash is) but I am inexperienced so in dire need for technical support. I am unsure if I can return the drive as I didn't buy it from Amazon so... (the refund policy is probably already broke!) I'm pretty much stuck with a useless drive, right?
So my drive is: Verbatim 43888 (LG BU40N)?
Below I will attach any details and update information about the drive if its needed!
I am unsure the date it was made (ISNT LISTENED ON PRODUCT BOX). and i havent done anything to it. it was brand new when i unboxed it. tried to rip a uhd movie with it with MakeMKV but it said: "LibreDrive compatible drive is required to open this disc - video can't be decrypted."
