WH16NS60 Stops responding mid rip.

Post by MK1234Tfan »

Hi All!

I recently purchased a LG WH16NS40 that says it was flashed to WH16NS60 Firmware v1.00 Official UHD Unlocked and only rips UHD at 4x MAX. It says in the listing that the sleep bug was fixed, but reading on the forum 1.03 is the best version and fixes this bug and faster ripping speed? I have it in a NexStar DX enclosure. Previously I had an old Bluray drive that didn't support UDH and had no issues for many years. Now that I've bought this drive for UHD I have nothing but issues. I have a new OWC on the way to rule out an issue with the drive enclosure. I've also tried a new USB 3.0 cord to no avail.

What's happening is the first day I received it and it worked without issue all day with UHD. Day 2 I started getting errors and then the drive would just go unresponsive. Even hitting the eject button wouldn't do anything. I'd have to turn it off and then on again just to eject the disc. The errors and how often the errors happen are very inconsistent, but I'm no longer able to rip a UHD without it failing or not being recognized by Windows and MakeMKV.
I just tried a UHD which failed after only a minute. I removed the disc, turned off the enclosure and back on. I popped in a DVD and I even got errors when trying to read the disc in MakeMKV. So this is not isolated to just UHD.
Error 'Scsi error - HARDWARE ERROR:LOGICAL UNIT FAILURE' occurred while reading 'BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS60 1.00 KLZO6JJ2009' at offset '524288'
Error 'Scsi error - NO SENSE:NO ADDITIONAL SENSE INFORMATION' occurred while reading 'BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS60 1.00 KLZO6JJ2009' at offset '524288

Is this a possible firmware issue or is this a drive failure right out of the box? I'll hopefully have the enclosure soon to rule that out. Looking at the LibreDrive firmware pack, should I have HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600-212005081010.bin installed instead of 1.00?

I have a couple of screenshots of various errors but I get a broken image when I try to include them in the post.
Some says STATUS_DEVICE_NOT_CONNECTED
A device which does not exist was specified. An error occurred while reading \Device\CDRom0
NOT READY:LOGICAL UNIT IS IN THE PROCESS OF BECOMING READY occurred while reading...
The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume hs occurred while reading.

No, it's most likely not a firmware issue. It sounds like the drive is struggling to read the disc and is running out of power. Try cleaning the discs before attempting to rip them again. Also, if possible, use USB ports direct from the motherboard, not case ports or use a powered (30w+) hub.
Cheers :D

Hey MartyMcNuts,

Thanks for the reply. So there are no known issues with the v1.00 firmware even though v1.03 is recommended? I did read about the invisible film on the discs and did clean it and still have issues. I had a couple times when Windows actually told me it was an unrecognized device. Out of curiosity, I did try a UHD again that I got a successful rip from on the first day when it was working. This time around it will not rip anymore and the drive goes unresponsive. So the UHD I was able to rip on the first day now fails.

I also tried a DVD that is in perfect condition and cleaned as well and got errors on that when reading the disc. The drive enclosure is plugged directly into the USB 3.0 motherboard in the back of my PC. The power cord to the enclosure is also plugged directly into the wall and is the power supply that came with the enclosure. I also bought a new USB 3.0 cord in case it was that and still the same issue.

I've been reading bad things about the NexStar enclosure so my new OWC one should be here Thursday.

Thank you very much for the help!

1.03 is not recommended at all. WH16NS60 1.02-MK or WH16NS60 1.00 are recommended. The former is the best overall firmware version for your drive and works well with MakeMKV. The latter is the next best but has wider software compatibility.
Cheers :D

I stand corrected then. I had found a post of someone saying 1.03 was the best.

So I'm back. I ended up finding the post that says 1.02MK like you said is recommended and not 1.03 like I originally thought. viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19634 If I understand it correctly, if I want to use it with a different ripping software I would need 1.02MK?

As for my LG drive that was giving me issues. It was the NexStar enclosure. I got the OWC enclosure and has been working great non-stop for 2 days running v1.00. 6-8x. I'm not sure if it has to do with power like was mentioned before or the PCB in the enclosure is better. The one thing I did notice is the OWC enclosure power supply is 12v3A and the NexStar is only 13v2A.

Maybe that extra amp helps out? Either way, if anyone reads this, get the OWC enclosure and you should be good. As long as your drive isn't faulty. I still have have a Verbatim 43888 from Germany coming doon and I'm hoping it's a pioneer!

1.02 MK firmware is recommended. For greater compatibility with other ripping software 1.00 is recommended /needed.

if you can open the drive casing, then i would suggest you can try to clean the laser heads with a QTip dipped in alcohol.
it might just be an issue with the laser heads. even though its a brand new set, sometimes a thin layer of gunk could have accumulated on it while sealed up in the box while in the storage hold rooms.

Thanks for the suggestion.
No cleaning was needed at all. For some reason it just wasn't working right with the NexStar enclosure. Everything has been working perfectly nonstop with the OWC enclosure without a single issue.
