Supported drives for just DVDs

Noob here, I don’t have a Blu-ray drive yet but most of my disks right now are just plain dvds anyhow. I have an Asus DRW-24B1ST- 28 manufactured on December 2015 and wasn’t sure if this would work for ripping dvds or not.
Are DVDs rippable from any old dvd rewriter or does it need to be specific optical drives that can be flashed?

For strictly DVD, any drive (not CD) should do.
