i think its because your pc does not support h.265 decoding

i saw somewhere to use UHD drive in pc even the pc needs to be updated to a certain intel generation processor or the motherboard... not sure if that is true..

Anyway, I am not liking this.. i got 4k UHD player but don't like how the sound is staged from my receiver to the speakers .. is there a way to move the drive back to its firmware I am thinking to just return this drive.. not sure yet will try few things with vlc and see if I can get a smooth picture with a proper lip/dialog sync ..

This is my PC's configuration..probably can ignore the RAM part .. yes this is an old pc I built-in 2014 or 2015.

Can I get the WH14NS40 back to the firmware it came with initially before I downgraded it? if so which file should I use to get it back to 1.05.

Of course the GTX 770 can not decode HEVC/H. 265 (which are often used for UHD), but H. 264 UHD should work fine: Like chummy02 said: frame rates matter

damn, this is not good. did the makemkv and vlc integration and got this output...is this because the drive speed is low? I get a pixellated video and it hangs in between .. I have always played my movies through pc and I like it and PowerDVD allows or does the sound output so well I didn't buy a standalone blu ray player etc .. with 4k i am not seeing any proper UHD pc drive if there is any please let me know which can be used along with power DVD.. but my guess it will cost a fortune? i saw somewhere to use UHD drive in pc even the pc needs to be updated to a certain intel generation processor or the motherboard... not sure if that is true.. i usually liked PowerDVD than vlc not sure why.. lol I liked how it outputs sound from the speakers... especially dialogue coming out of all speakers.. with standalone players it only comes from the center speaker.

1. As Billy advised your GPU needs to be capable of processing h.265. Also, yes, for full legitimate/legal UHD BD playback on PC straight from disc on official licensed players like PowerDVD without bypassing AACS protection(s) you need a fully SGX capable/compatible PC. The details as to what that means are are all listed in PowerDVD’s website and Google will provide thousands of detailed discussions on that as well. That horse has been beaten to death already a thousand times over, so no need to get into the details yet again here.

2. Look at software AnyDVD HD (again, Google is your friend) and see if that option is viable to you. They support on the fly decryption of some UHD content playback alongside PowerDVD. They have their own active support forum as well.

I didn't want to move yet to 4k but I think I have to now, so yes I should probably do my own research a little bit more on this based on what I have ( I mean my PC and its config and whether it can handle playing 4k movies or not )

one question, I will check on that too, so these so-called fully SGX capable/compatible PC come with 4k UHD drives ? or we have to purchase them and put them in the drive slot? or is it that we have to get external 4k pc drives for them and use it that way.

you would only need to get a new GPU nvidia 10xx series or higher for unofficial playback.
i wouldn't go down the sgx rabbit hole even if you meet all the requirements sometimes it does not work powerdvd for official UHD is trash.

even a GTX 1650 is faster than a gtx 770 now not by much but it is faster.

Just saying you should also get an hdr monitor or tv if you don't already have one the tine mapping had gotten alot better but originally it would have been unwatchable

If you're looking to use Power DVD Ultra to play back discs Google up the Cyberlink Advisor program and run it on your PC. It will tell you what kind of shape you're in as far as meeting their hardware requirements. I've still yet to get a clean bill of health no matter what I do lol.

you have encrypted firmware use the enc option with makemkv or the sdf tool and check the enc box and flash the recommended firmware from the guide it can be found in the all you need firmware pack.

I ran it and seems it worked even though at the end I got an error message.. so my main question is even if the drive is now able to open and see UHD drives ... how can I make the movie play from the drive which software I have to use? clearly, Power DVD is not working .. it gives the error "cannot play this content as it is corrupted " BS

tried vlc and it gave an error too.. so all this firmware allows is to make Mkv file of the UHD drive to rip the disc and watch it?

Hi! I have the exact same drive with same identification and followed what you did here and it worked well with my drive. I appreciate your level of detail.

To add, I used the "HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin" file in the MK\Old folder from the "mk-firmware-pack-20200720" file I downloaded from the pinned post in this forum on my HL-DT-ST-BD-RE WH14NS40 1.05 drive. I would have tried one of the "HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH14NS40-NS50*.bin" files (because that seems to me to be a closer match to my model) had it not been for the information in this thread. Thanks!

Flashed it to DE_LG_WH16NS60_1.02_MK.bin using the 1.3.5 flasher tool.
Then flashed to DE_LG_WH14NS40-NS50_1.02.bin.
Then flashed to HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH14NS40-NS50-1.05-NM00900-212005061444.bin

My question is: is what is the the latest and greatest firmware to apply for this drive?

Using MakeMKV as my primary tool, I want to have the optimal firmware for fast read speeds, LibreDrive allowance and disc compatibility. Which is the 'best' to firmware to land on?

its not de wh16ns60 1.02 mk it just wh16ns60 1.02mk
my guide has been constantly updated with the new and safer methods and easiest methods for over 4 years i would only use this guide most others are outdated
there one other on anydvd thats fine but other than that the rest are old
