Pardon my ignorance, but long time lurker and finally signed up an account. Is there a set amount of time or posts that need to be made before I can send a PM?
Thanks!

Yes, there are. In the mean time, your posts will be authorized for viewing, and private messaging is disabled.
That is why the people doing support for various drives recommend sending an email message with your information, for things like certificates and such.

Thanks for the confirmation. Was hoping to reach out by PM to Billycar11, think there might be something funky going on with the email address I was using to communicate with him. I'll just try again from a different email account.

Re: New Account / Private Messages
I also just signed up but was reading along for quite some time. Just wondering how long this stage lasts? Is it only based on activity, time or a mixture of both?
And I've replied to a different discussion, but will need to edit my answer, because my memory was not fully correct. Would it be preferred to make an additional post with the correction, or to edit it? I would have intuitively opted for editing because it seems cleaner, but that would mean my answer won't be visible, until the edit gets approved. That's fine by me, I was just wondering if maybe in this case it would be preferred to make a follow up post instead if it's easier to approve maybe?

Re: New Account / Private Messages
The new user "must be approved" thing is a reaction to literal spam messages. It's down to just a few per day, after years of not allowing them to appear, but they still try. There are certain domains email domains that are almost guaranteed to spammers, and some that are a big home to them (gmail comes to mind).

Thanks for your reply. I'm just wondering when I'll be able to use private messages? Or do I just have to wait and see?

Interesting came here myself for the same reason. I’ve been lurking for past few weeks and reading up on various topics. Finally got my first drive working today and started ripping a movie. Have a Pioneer BDR-212V, with old firmware. Trying to get it updated.

Re: New Account / Private Messages
Figured I would also piggy back into this thread being a new member.
Didn't see a new member section to just say hello.
Came here for the unbelievable wealth of knowledge many of you being and share.
Have already chatted via Reddit and email with Billy who helped me with getting my first drive ordered.
Just hoping to learn and get to backing up my old DVD/Blu ray collection.
Would like to eventually build my own NAS setup in the near future.
Anyways drive should be here today. Just hoping I can get my internet backup and running but waiting on installer to splice fiber at the house.
Anyone want to wade through 5 ft of snow that knows how to splice fiber optic?

Re: New Account / Private Messages
When fiber was installed at my place a couple years ago the machine they brought to splice the fiber was almost completely automated and surprisingly small. Hopefully it goes as easy at your place as it did at mine.RocketDonkey wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 7:44 pmAnyways drive should be here today.
