BDR-211UBK won't rip 4K discs that other drives rip fine

Hi folks, I have a BDR-211UBK that will not rip 4K discs, it errors out with "Can't read AACS VID from disc". I also have a BDR-212UBK on the other hand rips all the 4K discs the BDR-211UBK won't rip. The highest seen AACS version on both drives is v60. Both drives were purchased new in retail boxes from B&H years ago when they were still sold. I tried different USB enclosures and connecting directly via SATA, no change. I also tried the same 4K discs on a BDR-209DBK crossflashed to a BDR-211M and a brand new Asus BW-16D1X-U crossflashed to the BW-16D1HT v3.10 firmware and they rip just fine as well. I emailed the .tgz file that MakeMKV created on the BDR-211UBK to svq@makemkv.com for analysis.

MakeMKV for the BDR-211UBK:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV info for the BDR-212UBK:

Here's an example of a disc that the BDR-211UBK won't rip:

Bad case? Try swapping how they are hooked up case maybe it's not passing through libredrive commands

Are they USB or SATA this is only likely if USB

I tried both drives in the same USB enclosure, so I know the enclosure is good.

I also tried the 211 drive in two other known good enclosures, same thing.

It plays all other discs just fine, just not 4K UHD. It sees the disc and I can browse the files on it.

I also tried XReveal, it complains it can't remove bus encryption either on its own or via LibreDrive.

See if this works. Its been talked about and maybe it could help.
Make sure all CD-DVD-Blu Ray-UHD drives are not connected.
Go to C:\Users\your users name here\.MakeMKV delete the _private_data.tar file.
Connect the 211M (UBK) and open Makemkv and put in a UHD disc. Let Makemkv do its thing and update the _private_data.tar.
See if this helps.

I tried that, it just did the HK download and then gave the same "Can't read AACS VID from disc" error.

I did more testing. I connected the BDR-211UBK drive via SATA and LibreDrive works fine now.

So leaving this post up for those who have the same problem.

Really bizarre that I have three other drives (2x Pioneer, 1x Asus) that work fine in three different USB enclosures.

Only this BDR-211UBK refuses to run in LibreDrive mode over USB (connected directly to computer, no hubs), but it works over SATA.

That is pretty odd. I have the same drive and never had any issue with it ever. As of now I have it connect to Benfei SATA to USB 3.0 cable. It reads, burns and rips all forms or media with no issues. I noticed your firmware date is 2023-02-08. I really don't think that would affect your drive since it is already UHD enable from factory. Glad it is working for you connected directly to a SATA, Power cable from your computer.

Pretty sure this comes down to the enclosure SATA USB bridge.

Use the drive internally or buy this adapter:
