Pioneer BDr-XD08U Slow [SOLVED] [Network Issue]

Post by TheShoe »

Have this drive with FW 1.04. Bought it maybe 2-3 months ago.

Over time I have noticed it has become incredibly slow to rip UHDs (it was a champ prior to this!). For example on my Seinfeld UHDs it can take hours to rip one disc. These are triple layer discs - at least the bath I am on now, so maybe that is an issue for this drive... MakeMKV does not show any errors, and it says the read rate is 12.6 M/s [2.9x], but the write seems to pause/stutter in larger files and in between files it can take some time before the next file processing begins. Note these are also full backups, not rips to MKV

Not sure if others have experienced issues with this drive over time.

It is important to clean UHD discs before ripping. Wash them with liquid soap and warm water. They use to have an invisible film on them even new. If that doesn't help there#s something wrong with the destination drive to be slow. Max UHD ripping with Pioneer drives is 4x FYI.

Thanks.

Determined it's a network or drive issue - my speeds dropped from 100 MB/s to 11MB/s. Need to do some testing and check smartctl as well.

Closing the loop on this:

It was a network issue. No root cause identified, but restarting my Netgear unmanaged switch mitigated it for now. I'm not hitting 113 MB/s write speed again and the Pioneer is hitting 3.8x.
