Verbatim 43888 LG BU40N Firmware: 1.03 vs 1.05

Hi all,

I recently purchased a second Verbatim 43888 as a back-up drive. I was expecting to receive the LG BU40N, and that's exactly what I got.

I already have a 43888 with a Pioneer drive, so I've decided to use the LG as my primary drive (preserving the Pioneer). As I'm just backing up Blu-ray's at this point, I don't really need the LG drive to be able to handle UHD's. I don't really have an issue with flashing the drive, but since I'm just backing up Blu-ray's, I'd like to avoid flashing the drive if I can help it. If it ain't broke, don't fix (flash) it.

I have a question about the 1.05 firmware (which is what the LG drive came with). I have heard anecdotes that 1.05 can create corrupted backups (because it powers through unreadable sectors). I've therefore heard that firmware 1.03 is better in this regard. Is this true or false? Or is detecting/reporting errors during a disc back-up the primary domain of the MakeMKV software?

I've never encountered any errors in the 60-odd Blu-ray's I've already backed up with my Pioneer drive, so I have no experience with disc errors thus far (lucky?).

Purely from a perspective of using this drive for Blu-ray back-up's only (no UHD), is firmware 1.05 less/equal/better than 1.03?

Thanks

makemkv would detect the corruption
all lg and asus fw do that not something special about 1.05

What about DVDs though? I've never gotten to the bottom of that... With Blu-rays and 4Ks, MMKV can compare hash checksums... but how would it know that there was a problem with a DVD copy unless the drive threw up an error?

Dvd you have less of an idea if you start seeing the drive slow way down below 2x you know something is wrong
