OWC Mercury Pro Enclosure + BDR-S13JX Issue ?

Hello,

I originally had a Vantec NexStar DX with a PIONEER BDR-212T, but after seeing posts about those enclosures possibly killing drives—and recommendations to use the OWC Mercury Pro, I switched. I modified the tabs so drive would fit, and my 212T has worked fine in the OWC

I recently got a BDR-S13JX. After swapping it into the same OWC enclosure, MakeMKV throws errors on start and when reading a disc. MakeMKV is current and using the latest SDF. I’ve tried power-cycling and rebooting.

Since the enclosure was recommended here and worked with my 212T, I was skeptical it was the issue, but to be thorough I pulled the S13JX out and tested it with a SATA-to-USB adapter, and it worked fine.

Full failing log (OWC enclosure + S13JX): MakeMKV_log.txt

Since posting I have tried:

Different USB cables, ports, and a hub
Disabling selective suspend/UASP power mgmt
Power supply (BDR-S13UBK 12V3A)
Running in Linux

No change.

I did also swap the drive into the BDR-S13UBK enclosure and it seems to work fine there - so definitely seems to be an isolated OWC + S13JX issue.

Does anyone else have this combination?
Is this a defective unit or will it be the same if I get it replaced?

Are you sure the OWC enclosure isn't a dud?

I’m not sure — I didn't think so, since it works fine with two different BDR-212T drives. I wasn't going to attempt an RMA if the replacement was going to behave the same, leading to me asking if anyone here has this exact combo working.

I did contact OWC support and they asked me to run their diagnostic tool, but it collects an extreme amount of unrelated system/personal data that I didn't want to share, so I asked them which specific parts they needed and I would provide them with that instead. Waiting on their reply.
