Hitachi-LG USB Blu-ray Drive BP55EB40 SVC EB52

Post by regatta »

Hello.

I have just bought a new Hitachi-LG slim portable Blu-ray writer. The drive details are :

SVC Code: EB52

Drive Information
OS device name: D:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BP55EB40
Revision: 1.03
Serial number: SIK
Firmware date: 2121-07-08 16:06
Bus encryption flags: 17

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

I would like to ‘update’ the firmware to take advantage of LibreDrive, I have read so many threads on how to achieve this that I have now become rather confused. I would appreciate it if some kind person could check my plan of action to make sure it is correct, before I do it.

Using SDFtool Flasher (v1.3.6) -

1. Flash drive to BP55EB40-NB50-1.03 from MK firmware pack

2. Choose recover drive in tool,

When prompted, select BP55EB40-NB50-1.03 (same file as in step 1)
Then in ‘firmware to write’ select DE_LG_BU40N_1.00 from All you need firmware pack.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

I've my first EB52 for flashing here. I thought I do some experimental with it. Just flashed to LG BU40N 1.03MK like the EB40.....and 4K ripping is fine.

Why is the the second step to 1.00 necessary with the EB52?

It's not for Makemkv / AnyDVD / XReveal. Only if you want to use DVDFab / Passkey.

Yeah, the 1.00 compatibility with DVDFab is known. But I thought for the EB52 there is a special reason for this. Or does that only apply to the WP/BP50NB40 with SVC EB52?

Hi, I bought exactly the same drive as you with all parameters you specified and I followed all your steps to flash the firmware. I did exactly what you did, but I still cannot read UHD disks.

This are my parameters now after flash:

Drive Information
OS device name: D:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BP55EB40
Revision: 1.03
Serial number: SIK0EO1NG4823
Firmware date: 2120-05-07 09:24
Bus encryption flags: 17

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)
Firmware version: 1.03
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

Could you please tell me what I possibly did wrong? Maybe the "include boot" option must be ticked? Many thanks in advance for you answer!

It looks like something went wrong, and only the first step succeeded. No need to tick "include boot loader". No need to tick "encrypted firmware" either, at this point.

You need to follow these exact steps :

First, remove the disc that's inside the drive if there is one. Then start SDFtool flasher, select your drive in the upper drop-down menu, and select RECOVER Drive.

You will be asked to select a file. Select the file that starts with "HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BP55EB40-NB50-1.03" inside the BP55EB40-NB50 folder of the mk firmware pack.

Do *not* click on START yet. Next, click on the lower drop-down menu, and select DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin from Marty's All You Need Firmware pack. Although if you don't care much about DVDFab compatibility, you might want to select DE_LG_BP60NB10_1.00_MK.bin instead for this second step. It has much less trouble with difficult discs, in my experience.

Click on START. Wait until the operation finishes (wait until SDFtool flasher says "Ready" again, then you can click on "EXIT").

Power cycle the drive afterwards (this can be done by unplugging it, waiting 30 seconds or so and re-plugging it). Then try inserting/ripping a UHD disc again, and please let us know how it goes.

EDIT : In the first version of my post, I implied that the DE_LG_BP60NB10_1.00_MK.bin firmware isn't Linux-compatible. This was a mistake on my part due to lack of sleep. :) It is Linux-compatible.
