LG BU40N firmware 1.05

Post by chihwahli »

Drive production date was in 2024.

Had to buy a normal sata male (22 pin) to Sata female (13 pin) converter for my standard Chinese USB 3.0 to SATA (22 pin) cable.
As someone else mentioned somewhere on this forum. I had the "sam" uab-to-sata cable twice. Used 1 for my SSD for weeks.
Then tried to use the 2nd one for the LG BU40N, no detection by windows 11. Then removed the SSD and connected the BU40N, and it worked, connected the first cable to the SSD, both works. Dunno why.

Just uploaded the firmware to MakeMKV, all seems to be well with my Blu-ray.
No need to change firmware so far, tried several blu ray. Finally I can backup my movie collection for myself. I lost some DVD along the years.
Just a pity. Must say, some where purchased 2nd hand.

If the drive is not detected.

Do not attach too many USB drives onto your computer. PnP (plug and play, aka plug or pray) might not work very well.
Attach what is working, power down, attack 1 more, power up, see if it works. Some devices are not full PnP.

- so plug 1 device at a time try if it works.
- exchange cable, maybe even try different USB 3.0 to SATA brands
- Power down the window$ machine, attach 1 more device (SSD, HHD or Blu ray drive through USB 3.0)
- power up Window$
- check if it works, if not swap and try combinations of your USB 3.0 ports
- Some USB 3.0 ports must remain un-used, cannot use them all at the same time, due to no PCI-E express lanes available.

PCI-E express lanes: computer needs a full wire towards the CPU to be able to work. That means you just cannot hook up everything you have and think it will work. Internally sometimes a SATA drive and M2 SSD will have a conflict because there is just not enough PCI-E express lanes to use both SATA and M2 at the same time, same with USB 3.0. Computer descides who gets the Express lane, depending on chipset it might be M2, or Sata SSD. It's a gamble.

So far, very happy with Blu ray processing. It is fast. 1 disc takes about 22 minutes, it saves everything, I just look up into the folders and search for the main movie file, then copy that one away towards my backup disc. Working flawlessy. Thank you.

Re-flashed the 1.05 to 1.03MK , tool sold by https://uhdenableddrives.com/
I found this in the MakeMKS forum user

The link to this tool I found at the users info, mentioned at user "MartyMcNuts " who is also the guide creator of below:
lots of info about many drives: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19634

Before you buy: use firefox, also disable download prtections like malwarebytes, it will block your download, then you can borther the tool programmer to unlock your download amounts, again! Save him and yourselves time.

The tool at above website is really easy, must Install MAKEMKV first, then buy tool, download, REMOVE any DVD, close lid.
Start the tool, choose the firmware (there is only one, because at purchase you have to choose 1 only)

After flashing MakeMKV will show it is Libre, certain version. Done
(I scanned the tool with Malwarebytes, no problems. I was expecting a warning.)

Now even the nasty Deadpool & Wolverine bluray (both 2K and 4K) are no problem for MakeMKV.
Finally can protect my movie protection from nasty DVD rot. or accidental scrathes. :D
