Hello everyone,
I purchased a dell desktop on eBay (mistake #1) and it came with a LG BH16NS40 drive.....or so I thought. I took the drive out today and discovered that the real drive is an HP BD-RE BH40N. Sadly the seller updated the firmware to the 1.05 for the BH16NS40 and now the drive won't read any discs. Is there a way that I can fix this drive so It can read discs again or do I need to buy a new one?

It's using the sata cables from the factory. This desktop shipped with a BD-RE drive (Dell Precision T1700).

Yeah there is your issue they did not test that at all 2016 is safe cut off date would have never worked and can't be fixed without dosflash and ide mode.
Just file a change back on eBay or cc or return it.
And for your next drive buy from ond of the recommend sellers in the guide see below

I will file a change back asap. That's the issue with eBay. People are only out for a quick buck. Thank you for all your help.

As I'm reading more on drives, I'm learning that drives automatically update when the owner pops in a new Blu ray disc? How would one prevent these updates from taking place? Would flashing a custom firmware prevent these updates from happening down the line?

Drives do not update their firmware when you insert a blu-ray. A person has to choose to update the firmware of a drive. If you get a
LibreDrive enabled drive and then don't update the firmware on it, you'll be fine.

I see, I might be confusing firmware updates with AACS... is there a good resource to understand how things like this work in the blu-ray world?
