LG WH14NS40 No Longer Works

Post by lasvegaswhale »

So I got a brand new LG WH14NS40 from amazon, bought a powered SATA to USB adaptor. I succesfully flashed it without any problems and ripped about 10 movies or so without any problems. After failing half way throug ripping Saving Private Ryan a few times, I tried other discs and the drive won't work at all. It seems like it doesn't even spin up. So I'm assuming I have a junk unit. I'm just wondering a couple of things. I used a powered SATA to USB adaptor, should I have used an enclosure instead? And if so, which one? And after reading a bit, I see that LG does have high failure rate with their drives, so should I invest my money in a different drive?

Those drives are junk. Try powering it off for half an hour or so before connecting it and powering up again. Sometimes a reset like this can help.
It doesn't really matter whether you use a powered SATA to USB adapter or an enclosure. If you do want an enclosure, look at the Vantec DX2.

Yes, Pioneer drives are far superior in every way. You can get the Verbatim 43888 that may contain a Pioneer BDR-UD04 inside which will work OOTB or a BDR-212V (or BDR-212DBK depending on your locale). These still have old firmware and can be flashed (contact Billycar11 regarding flashing them).

Other Pioneer models from stores will have firmware that is post November 2022 and is not currently compatible. If you want a different model than the Verbatim or BDR-212, the oonly way to get one is from a seller on this forum.
Cheers :D
