OK … my Pioneer UD04 has given up the ghost: I’ve lost the cuff the holds a disc on the spindle.

I’m looking at replacing it with one of the link drives.

I’m no coder: so want to know which will work out of the box with MakeMKV, out of the box, with little fiddling about.

And which will be able to read 4k discs with no added help.

(I’m using a 2024 Mac mini running macOS 15.2)

Possibly neither.

The XD08 won't work as it will have firmware that is newer than December 2022 and is not compatible nor downgradeable.

We have no idea what actual model drive is inside that other one. You would need to find that out before we can advise further.

Your best bet for a drive that may work OOTB is to get a Verbatim 43888 as it should still contain a Pioneer BDR-UD04 inside, unless you happen to get the version containing a LG BU40N. If so, it won't work OOTB but can easily be flashed.
