Drive with fastest ripping times, but just needs blu-ray not 4k/UHD?

Post by kjsalat »

Hi all, totally new to this so appreciate your patience and guidance.

If I'm looking to find the drive with the fastest ripping times for my 500-disc collection but also doesn't need anything beyond blu-ray or dvd ripping capabilities, is there anything I should be considering in my search?

Budget isn't much of a concern, looking for the drive that would give me the optimal blu-ray ripping setup. Had been considering the BDR-XS07UHD but not sure if I should consider other options. Thank you for your help!

Fast rip times depends on the disk being ripped. A drive capable of 6x speed can get UP TO 6x, at the outer edge of the disk, but still rip at just a 2-3x rate for most of the disk.

Faster is running multiple drives with multiple copies of MakeMKV, staggering your collection between them. When I have even just a couple of disks to rip, I'll do them in parallel. I recently did a 12-disk set, where setting up the names to rip to was the longest time I put into them, often having both drives running at their full rate (which averaged out to 4x, on 6x drives).

MakeMKV can be run with (per reports) at least a dozen drives, if your system handles them. The person reporting that was trying to find ways to get his hardware to accept more drives. Just a pair of drives is simple to do on most machines using the built-in ports, and if that isn't enough to keep you busy loading things, USB drives are easy to find. Powering them so they can run at full speed, though, can be an issue.

If, you aren't interested in UHD, why are youy looking at the UHD model?? For non-UHD, a BDR-XS07TS or BDR-XD08TB or something like that would probably be a bit cheaper!

Are you absolutely sure you won't need the ability to rip UHD discs someday?? If you are sure, most blu-ray drives offer around the same speeds, so you could pretty much get any model. But, if you may require UHD readability someday, you'd be better off with a either a Pioneer model from one of the sellers here or a LG BU40N.

As Woodstock said, running multiple drives is an even better option.
Cheers :D
