N00b question about flashing

Hiya all!
This is probably a silly question, but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer yet, so here goes. My BF and I are putting together a little custom built NAS server. The plan is to have an optical drive in it, along with some tooling to automatically rip discs to make their content available for streaming on our local network. Right now, to get started, we're just using a DVD drive from the old box of spares, but I'm wondering if it'd be worth upgrading to a 4K capable bluray drive in the future. I've seen the big firmware flashing topic, and it's very impressive, but what I'm still fuzzy about is this: is flashing always necessary in order to enable MakeMKV to rip disks, regardless of the operating system used and/or anything else? The NAS wil run Linux (likely Debian), the ripping tool we're looking at is https://github.com/rix1337/docker-ripper
Thanks in advance for any and all help!
