Blu-Ray mkv rip not 4K with Pioneer DBR-XD08UMB-S?

Post by firefly1234 »

Hi there,

I just purchased the Pioneer BDR-XD08SUMB-S from Amazon. Based on my understanding, this drive should work out of the box with makemkv 1.17.4 without needing to flush the firmware. While reading and ripping a 4K disc is successful, it seems like the mkv file is only 1080p resolution (I looked at the file info via VLC). My system is a 2021 MacBook Pro running macOS Venture 13.4.1.

Please advise.

Thanks.

MakeMKV will rip what you tell it to rip, if it can read it; just because a disk is included in a 4K set, though, that does not mean it contains the 4K movie. Typically, a "dual" or "triple" release (4K, BD, optional DVD) will have the 4K on its own disk, with a UHD marking.

If you got a 1080p rip from it, that's the BD. Because of the way players work, the UHD/4K will only have UHD/4K content. Any "extra" stuff will be on the separate BD.

Thanks. I think the problem is with the disc as you pointed out.I just tried another UHD disc and it works just fine.
