I used to have this drive on some variation of the 1.03 firmware from the mk-firmware-pack-20200720 zip. It was working but occasionally would make a horrible sound. I thought I need to change the firmware back to 1.02, as that seems to be the most common firmware used throughout the forum. I have tried multiple ways and instructions to get the firmware back on track. The last thing I did was go back to factory 1.03 and used the powershell method shown in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyQV1aPlbow to get the drive information you see above.

I bought the drive in 2020 and it has never been perfect sometimes you'd have to restart the pc or open and close the tray before it realized there was a disc. Now the issue is that no matter what kind of disc I put in it, it claims there is no disc. After searching the forum for a day or two I finally decided to make a post to see if someone with more experience can see something I am missing or provide a solution.

If this drive has just died, what is the next best option for an internal desktop drive that is UHD compatible? Thank you in advanced.

It's probably dead but take it apart clean the lasers and see if It comes back.
If not get a BU40N or pioneer UHD drive

Interesting

I have a BH16NS40 internal drive that just stopped working

I was away for three weeks, came back, copied 2 discs with no issue then a couple of days later it stopped working and now it will not even read plain CDs or software discs.

There was a windows update in between and it happened the same day as yours. Is there something else at play? Mine was on 1.02 as well and tried other versions but still the same result.

Will attempt some cleaning of the lasers but i am not hopefull.

Which drives are best considering i am in the UK - happy to buy external drives as well if necessary.?

Is this the same model as the ones you are customising for sale here? : https://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-BU40N-ARAA1 ... C48&sr=8-1

Thanks

Yes I recommend the BU40N or a UHD pioneer.
That is the drive I sell but I buy it preassembled in a case from archgon

Thanks Billy,

I reckon i will go for the UHD Pioneer ones sold by asmcom here in the UK as it sounds like they are enabled from the factory with no additional firmware required and would rather go for an external enclosure this time.

I just ordered this one instead straight off Amazon hoping this will work straight away with no firmware flashing?

Sadly i am away for a couple of weeks and asmcom is on holiday just now as well and wanted to sort it before the weekend.
