Replacement for my Asus BW-16D1HT?

Post by makini__ »

Hi everyone,

somehow it seems that my Asus BW-16D1HT died. I used to run it in my Unraid Server but a while ago it stopped reading discs, see screenshot.

And when connected to my MacBook with my Unitek Y-1099NEW, the drive is not recognized at all. No matter what I try. Very cumbersome.

Fortunately, Amazon takes it back. So now I am looking for a replacement.

I could get the same but the BU40N is less expensive. Is it save to buy or could it come with a FW not flashable? I could get a used one (mint condition) for a good price but don’t want to end up with a drive not usable to rip UHDs.

Thanks a lot!

bu40n is a tank. AFAIK there aren't any firmware versions that can't be flashed. I recommend flashing it back to 1.00 firmware if you get one. I've had zero problems with this little drive.

Recently some of us have begun using Pioneer drives, as well. I have the BDR-212UBK, as an example. It's slower than the BU40N but it reads just as well so far in my testing. So you have options.
