BU40N Reports Successful Flash Without Actually Updating

Post by darknight »

I just purchase BU40N and Vantec NST-510S3-BK 9.5mm Slim SATA Case from Amazon. I tried flashing using both makemkvcon64 and SDF tool and both of them said it was successful but the firmware hadn't actually changed.

The firmware I tried was:
HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin
HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.04-NM00500-212005061142.bin

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: I:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.02
Serial number: MO6LXXXXXXX
Firmware date: 2120-12-01 17:16
Bus encryption flags: 1F
Highest AACS version: 76

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

No disc inserted
Does anyone have an idea why this is happening to me?

Did you reset the drive (power it down) after flashing? The new firmware will not load until the drive reboots.

I did and even tried on another computer.

That's a bit strange if it was build aug 21 it should have 1.04 but it has 1.02 but I also don't think 1.02 was originally from 2020
This maybe another case like the nb52 but just in case try it with enc if you haven't already

Hi Billy, I didn't try the ENC option because I didn't think 1.02 would have been encrypted. Guess what? It worked!

I know people were asking about the HLDS BU40N drives on these forums. Does that mean that the newer HLDS drives run an encrypted 1.02? Anyway, we have the answer if anyone asks.

Thanks Billy and darknight. I bought a BU40N off of Amazon and it had the same build date and firmware version. I also wasn't able to get the MK firmware to apply, but setting enc also did the trick. SDF Tool didn't recognize it as an encrypted firmware. Perhaps it's checking by version number? In any case, makemkvcon64 did the trick.

I had this same issue. For anyone that can't find the enc checkbox. It appears to be gone from SDFtool flasher 1.3 but it is on 1.2, I was able to use 1.2 to flash.

Thank you for the clarification. I am having the same problem on a mac.

How do I activate the enc option on the command line?

More context: I am using `makemkvcon f -l` and then `makemkvcon f -d drivename rawflash main -i firmware.bin` I am quite confident that I have the general things right, because I can flash an older drive of the same kind (BU40N 1.03 Dec 2019 vs BU40N 1.04 Mar 2021) in the same enclosure.

I found it in another post myself. Just use ´enc´ instead of ´main´, i.e.

Code: Select all

./makemkvcon f -d drivename -f sdf.bin rawflash enc -i firmware.bin
I am not sure if it is possible to also omit `-f sdf.bin` But now it works and I do not want to force my luck 8)

Just as an 'FYI' I recently bought an LG BU40N from Amazon and the manufacture date is May 2021. Firmware version 1.04. Successfully flashed with the HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.04-NM00500-212005061142.bin file from the MK firmware pack using SDFToolFlasher 1.3.1

Well I thought I got mine to work based on mkv_andy and his advice about flashing it using enc instead of main. It did flash and now I have my Libredrive info displaying:

Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/rdisk2
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.04
Serial number: MOEL91D4042
Firmware date: 2120-05-06 11:42
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 56

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)
Firmware version: 1.04
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

I did power off the drive (unplugging the USB and plugging back in). Closed MakeMKV and re-opened and again, my info showed. I used a BluRay and it read the disc and gave me the options to "download," but it eventually gives me the Error, Cant copy kinda message. I'm using a MAC and used terminal with "./makemkvcon f -d '/IOBDServices/AC377684' -f /tmp/sdf.bin rawflash enc -i /tmp/HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.04-NM00500-212005061142.bin". At a loss now. Any advice would be terrific.

If that's what MakeMKV tells you about your drive, then LibreDrive is enabled and you shouldn't need to flash your drive again.

A BU40N will rip a regular blu-ray without flashing. LibreDrive is needed to be able to rip UHDs.

If MakeMKV encountered an error while trying to rip your blu-ray, which is entirely possible, that's probably due to the disc being dirty and needing to be gently cleaned and not due to a firmware issue. If you can post your MakeMKV log, we can take a look. The bottom portion of the MakeMKV window is selectable. Control-Click or Right-Click to copy it.
