LG BP50NB40 v1.00 - should I flash modded firmware?

Post by herculeesjr »

I have an LG BP50NB40 with firmware v1.00 on it, I've had it for many many years and have successfully backed up over 200 HD (not UHD) movies with it installed inside my laptop. Along with countless old DVDs.
Sadly, it has decided to quit reading BluRays, but DVDs and CDs are fine. I'm currently almost halfway through the process of backing up roughly 70 audiobook CDs with EAC and am having no issues. If I put a BluRay in though it says it can't read it.
Cleaning the lasers had no effect, same as reinstalling the drive in the laptop, also recently did a fresh install of Windows 11 with no change. Probably the drive is just dying, but I was wondering if anyone thought upgrading the firmware would be worth a shot? I'm not sure if that comes with a downside is why I haven't done it. I want to try what I read here ( viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18933 ) but I don't understand what I'm supposed to flash and in what order. So I'm hoping someone can give their opinion and guide me how to do it, if I should.

Basically;
Do you think flashing this modded updated firmware might fix it?
Does it provide any other benefits like a ripping speedup or anything?
Are there any drawbacks?
