LG WH14NS40 Stopped Reading Disc

Post by stepmback »

Today I went to rip a UHD disc I just bought and it didn't work. Looked good so I tried again. Keeps saying No Disc after spinning for a couple of minutes. I tried another disc I had and got same message. Tried another and same message. I saw that a new version of MakeMKV was released so upgraded to that and tried at least 8 discs and all get same message. I even rolled back/ re-installed 4.16.3.

I then tried a DVD. That worked fine. Then I tried several blu-rays and none of those work.... still says no disc after running for a couple of minutes. I tried rebooting workstation. Opening and closing drive bay... nope.

No idea what happened. I have been ripping UHD on this drive for months and no problems.... now it wont do anything but a DVD. Any help is appreciated.

This what was in the log:

Could be the blue laser died, but before declaring 'time of death', try...

IF it's an external drive, remove power for~10sec, re-power & test.

IF it's an internal drive, shut down the PC (NOT just a reboot), remove power for~10sec, re-power/boot & test.

Some users have had success recovering a drive after a cold start. If the problem persists, the drive may be a goner.

That did it. It worked. Unplugged computer for about a minute plugged back in and it worked. Now able to rip the disc.

Thanks a lot for the insight.

Glad it worked.

For those of you following along at home...

What happens in LibreDrive mode

"When MakeMKV (or any other application that uses LibDriveIo library) talks to the drive, the library checks if drive firmware version is supported. If it is supported, the library uploads a small software (a firmware extension) into drive volatile memory. This extension exposes a new (alternative) interface to read any data from the disc. The firmware extension stays only in drive volatile memory (RAM) and drive firmware is not changed in any way. The moment you turn off your drive, it is gone without a trace. As long as your drive firmware is compatible with LibreDrive, and you do not update your drive firmware, the LibreDrive mode will work forever."
