Why are my WH16NS60 drives dying?

So far, I'm on my third WH16NS60 drive, and this too is dying. They work for ripping ~50 discs, and then they all start dying in the same way. They make a horrible grinding noise trying to read the disc, and then eventually fail to do so, sometimes claiming that there is no disc in the drive even when there is.
This is the sound it makes:

Are these drives all crap or is it just me? Am I killing them somehow? They've all been flashed with MK LibreDrive firmware, the last one to 1.03, and I use them with MakeMKV on Linux.

The BU40N is a slimline drive though, right? Wouldn't exactly fit well in my desktop PC case.

They sell adapter trays for "full size" (5.25") drive bays that mount both a 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive (or SSD) and a slim line optical drive. Just something to consider.

Have you tried doing a cold boot of your system when the drive stops working? Not a reboot. You need to remove power from the drive so that the drive starts fresh.

I haven't, no, but I'll give that a try next time. Thanks for the tip.

I just ran into this issue today, did you ever find a solution? I'm using an external OWC Mercury Pro enclosure connected to an iMac. I've unplugged power and USB from the enclosure, reseated everything, but no dice. Still have a bunch of 4K stuff that needs ingested

I have a question. All the people that have these dying NS60 drives....are you all enabling speed control? or have it set at all in the registry for these drives?

How is that set? I got my drive from Alex and I put it in an OWC enclosure and connected to my iMac. Is that something I set in MacOS, MakeMKV, or at a different layer?

i know your probably not looking for me to answer but
mine were all stock speed most had trouble with BD 66 and would read bd 100 fine the opposite what of you think would happen...
but there was a whole other subset of ones that could not even see bd 100s

The only time my NS60's (I have 3 of them) stop reading discs at all is when I have speed control set. If I leave them alone, they don't "die". They do have issues reading triple layer discs. That I think is a given with these drives. I'm just curious if the people who say their drives are "dying" are using speed control or not.
