First time flashing, questions about WH16NS40?

Hey all, I have just received a WH16NS40 with a Vantec NST-536S3-BK enclosure in the post. I have read through the ultimate guide a few dozen times, but have some questions. My goal is to crossflash it to latest UHD Official WH16NS60 v1.03 MK firmware in order to fix the sleep bug.

Here is the drive info from MakeMKV:

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: D:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WH16NS40
Revision: 1.05
Serial number: ***********
Firmware date: 2120-01-20 12:50
Bus encryption flags: 17

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible (with patched firmware)
Drive platform: MT1959
Harware support: Yes
Firmware support: No
Firmware type: Original (patched version available)
Firmware version: 1.05
DVD all regions: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw data read: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw metadata read: Possible (with patched firmware)
Unrestricted read speed: Possible (with patched firmware)

No disc inserted
The MFG date on the label is in 2020
Drive Platform MT1959
SVC Code is NS50

I know MT1959 is the firmware chip compatible with MK firmware.
What exactly is SVC NS50? What does SVC stand for?

The drive is on WH16NS40 NS50-1.05 official firmware. I know it is encrypted and can't be downgraded. Here is what I'm planning:
  • I believe I can flash it directly to WH16NS40 NS50-1.05 MK with the encrypted option checked in SDFtool_flasher, since it is the same version and not downgraded.
  • After the MK version is flashed which has the downgrade protection bit changed and is unencrypted, I can use SDFtool_flasher again to crossflash it to WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600 MK with enc option NOT checked.

Or, can I flash it directly to the WH16NS60 MK v1.03 fw from stock with enc option checked? Will crossflashing work with official (encrypted, downgrade protected) firmware already on it using SDFtool_flasher? It concerns me that the HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600-212005081010.bin does not mention NS50 anywhere. I don't want to end up bricking it.

I've downloaded the latest MK firmware pack from viewtopic.php?f=19&t=19113

Any input is greatly appreciated. :)

I have successfully flashed my WH16NS40 on ofw 1.05 to 1.05 MK and ripped UHD disc using the latest MakeMKV. It doesn't seem to have sleep bug, I've left my disc idle for more than 30 minutes trying to observe the sleep bug, and was able to proceed with the rip. maybe they have fixed this bug in the 1.05 fw?

Would I safely be able to use SDFtool_Flasher to flash WH16NS60 v1.03 MK with the enc option unchecked to unlock faster rip speeds?

Thanks :)

No enc once you are on mk but yes it will have faster stock speeds
