Hi all,

as you can probably guess from my title, i have done the dreaded thing and thought i was doing a good thing - upgrading the firmware on my LG drive to version 1.05, and then realising it was a pre svc ns50 drive and now it does not work.

Ive read through the forum guidelines, and have downloaded sdftool flasher - it sees the drive BH16SN40_1.05 and i wish to write the firmware with 1.01 as downloaded from here - however i could only find firmware for drive WH16SN40 - is there a firmware available for the BH or will the WH work?

im double checking before i press start and potentially make things worse!

thanks

thanks!

it didnt seem to work though

SDftool did say it was done successfully, but the firmware for the drive is still showing 1.05 instead of 1.01?

You can't use SDFtool to recover a NS40 drive with NS50 firmware. You'll need to use DOS recovery method as explained here towards the bottom of the post.

i thought from reading other posts on here that the sdftool was a newer way of being able to flash the drive to the older version without having to use dos?

im on windows 10 so dos isnt really going to be possible.

i thought from reading the messages on here it was going to be straight forward

i had contacted LG also and thought i would get somewhere with them but they now are not replying

That is because you “illegally” flashed your drive through a flashing method and with firmware that is 100% not supported officially by LG. Every modification that is discussed within the walls of this forum is not supported by any drive manufacturer for various reasons. As far as they are concerned, you voided any warranty and/or support from them upon flashing the drive with improper firmware.

If you feel you are at a complete dead end, it may be time to contact forum members who may provide one-on-one solutions where/if still possible to recover your old drive. Look here:

I thought the only way to recover was to use the DOS method.

The SDFtool Flasher's recovery option is supposed to be able to recover old NS40 drives incorrectly flashed with newer NS50 firmware but seems to be "hit and miss" at this stage.

Did you update using LG'S official firmware update tool? If so, your drive is screwed.

You could try downgrading to a non-encrypted firmware first before trying the recovery option again.

Flash 1.03MK from the firmware pack (enc checked). Once drive shows firmware has changed, try the recovery option again (no enc).

I have another suggestion for you to try. I still recommend getting off that encrypted firmware first so:

Using SDFtool Flasher,
1. Flash drive to BH16NS40_NS50_1.03_MK (with enc checked) (see attached files)
2. Try and flash drive to ASUS_BC-12D2HT_3.01_MK (see attached files)

If step 2 works and the drive shows as ASUS, please try the next step.

3. Flash the drive with DE_LG_BH16NS40_1.01 (see attached files).

Hopefully this all works and your drive is restored to BH16NS40 1.01.

i did not illegally flash my drive - it was flashed with the firmware downloaded from LG's own website!
it matched the model number of my drive, but did not mention there are two versions of the drives- the older version and the newer version

I have since tried to reflash it using suggestions on this forum to no avail - its still showing as firmware 1.05 as downloaded from LG website

Well, that is a very important point you did not clarify at the start of all this. Because there are multiple flashing methods floating in the net as you have already witnessed. At this point—and as Marty advised in one of his posts above—your drive is now “screwed”. You’ll be better off to buying a new drive. LG has some of the poorest customer support for most or all of their products, so it will be very difficult or impossible to get them to do anything.

Did you try the suggested method in my previous post? How did you go?
