All sorted now. Thought I might clarify what did/did not work in case anyone else runs into this.

This USB-to-slimline SATA lead is not working with makemkv 1.15.3, the drive does not even show up. However, many other Windows apps can work with the drive, but of course on this forum, it would be a lead to avoid.

This adaptor, combined with an AGPtek USB-to-full-size SATA powered adaptor (works with 5.25 inch drives), works first time. I have previously flashed an ASUS 5.25inch drive with the AGPtek adaptor, and with the slimline adapter connected as well, I now flashed the LG BU40N without a hitch.

I did a quick test to see that the LG is opening UHD discs and all is now good. I've yet to really test it "in battle" but I'm pleased to have this drive in my collection.

Many thanks to everyone associated with the SDF flasher tool, firmware packs etc for the fantastic resources available through this site.

First post in the forum (been a lurker for years), but had to register just to make this comment.

Thank you @morbius - after scratching my head for hours finally came across this thread, clicked your first amazon link and hey presto "You purchased this item" d'oh!

So waiting for my enclosure to arrive, hopefully that will work - else i'll have to probably go with either the vantec or the adapter route you suggested.

Cable now on it's way back to Amazon :D
