Hey guys any support for this burner I have just purchased it, I don't really want to flash it as the drive reads the 4k uhd disk just fine but are more interested in software that has cracked the aacs encryption so I can rip my purchased 4k movies to server and watch over my network. Anybody else have this drive what software you using?

Can you please post the status window of Makemkv to see what drive and firmware you have in that enclosure?

Sorry! Your drive is not capable to make UHD backups with Makemkv. You should have picked one of those listed here:

The FATE is NO longer DARK!

Dear @wizozzy,

thanks to @mike admin's continues efforts, the Pioneer gang (and relatives) has joined the UHD party via LibreDrive membership.

Code: Select all

PIONEER-BD-RW___BDR-UD04-1.00-4B3560E3-8A10-20170210
PIONEER-BD-RW___BDR-UD04-1.10-431D03CF-8A10-20170425
PIONEER-BD-RW___BDR-UD04-1.14-489CDFD6-8A10-20200615
Would you try, skinning your Terminator again with the help of the Verbatim 43888 drive?
Please not only try MakeMKV's ripping ability, but also the neat playback feature.

I'm also interested to hear if Verbatim 43888 is now LibreDrive enabled as it seems to be Pioneer drive inside.

Apparently that is the case.

2) Second, I would like to confirm that LibreDrive is working perfectly on Verbatim 43888 drive (Verbatim Slimline Ultra HD 4K; Pioneer BDR-UD04 drive inside).

Surely an affordable & welcome UHD blu-ray disc playback & ripping solution. Hopefully also an ideal companion (no dropouts or high noise levels) to any notebook with a HDMI 2.x output or the next Raspberry Pi.

I purchased this drive and can also confirm it is LibreDrive capable. I had it on 1.14 firmware (2020-06-15) matching the following entry.

Code: Select all

PIONEER-BD-RW___BDR-UD04-1.14-489CDFD6-8A10-20200615
Although it does not matter MakeMKV this drive seems to be official 4K UHD BD drive with AACS2 keys for e.g. proper SGX/PowerDVD Ultra usage. There are at least two model number variations and #43888 is this drive.

Thank You very much in advance.

Verbatim 43888 is 4K UHD compatible - IIRC the 43889 is not.

I just bought this drive and tried to rip a Bluray disk. MakeMKV version 1.18.1. OS is Linux Mint.

When I try to open the disk in MakeMKV I see this:

Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr1
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.05
Serial number: ****************
Firmware date: 2124-04-23 13:47
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 77

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

Do I need to upgrade to a newer firmware? (Not sure how to do that on a Linux PC?)

Thanks in advance

It should work fine for DVD and BD but if you want to rip UHD then you must downgrade to an older, comaptible firmware to enable libredrive and UHD readability.

The issue is that it doesn't seem to work with standard blu-rays either. The disk is spinning and MakeMKV seems to try to read the content but nothing happens (except the CPU seems to be under heavy load because the fan is spinning like crazy). I'm wondering if I need to flash the drive like it is described for Mac / Linux here:
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19634&sid=289b2bb8 ... c7e62e32f5
I was looking for the drive identifier but on my OS it looks very different compared to the description:
00: dev_21:1, /dev/sr0, /dev/sr0
So should the flash command be:
./makemkvcon f -d 'dev_21:1' -f /tmp/sdf.bin rawflash main -i /tmp/HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin
?
I'm a little confused because people say that this should be a Pioneer drive but it seems to be an LG drive in my device if I understand correctly
Thanks for your help!

Flashing won't make any difference to your problem.

Ensure you let the OS initialize the disc before opening MakeMKV.

Also ensure you are supplying the drive with sufficient, constant power. Use either USB-A ports direct from the motherboard, a self-powered USB hub (30w+) or use a USB-C port. The Verbatims' can be quite power hungry.

Thanks for your reply
I have tried on 2 different PCs. Running same Linux OS. I also tried copying the content of the disk to my NAS and let MakeMKV open the files from disk. That resulted in the application estimating some 8 hours to open the disk. Roughly 20 GB data…
It also gave tons of errors in the log. Mostly code 2
So I’m at a loss. My old LG drive worked flawlessly on Windows but it stopped working and is no longer recognized when I plug it into my PC. That is why I decided to switch to this one. Still confused by the different internal drive
But looks like I might as well return it because I don’t have any idea how to get this to work
Looks like Wine doesn’t support MakeMKV. I would be curious to see if things are different on Windows
