That drive is too old to be UHD-compatible. It doesn't matter what firmware it has, it will say "No Disk" if you insert a UHD disk.

As for whether or not it's screwed, there several experienced people here who can tell you your options.

saw it on a list but i guess it is infact too old and think i screwed myself. im looking at posts saying i can do something with dosflash. i am trying to look for the files they talk about. the problem is i dont know where to get the bin file for my drive.

your only chance to fix it is if your pc supports dos flash see the useful for recovery stuff here: https://makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19634
if you cant you could send it to me but its really not cost effective better to just buy a new drive

that windows usb saved my drive! was super easy. the hardest part was finding the correct port to connect the drive as only 1 port of 8 seemed to detect it. only thing is, i got this message on makemkv.
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION' occurred while reading 'BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS40 1.02' at offset '1048576'
should i worry? not sure if its the disk or a bad flash. followed the video, read my drive and saved it to desktop, used that mover from my dumped bin to a ns40 bin and made a new bin, flashed the new bin, disk detected on the drive without errors.
