No, the 1.00 firmware is not in the MK folder as it is the original, downgrade-enabled firmware. I've flashed heaps of these Archgon's and they all have come with 1.01. This means they can be flashed directly to DE_LG_BU40N_1.00. You can find the firmware in my DE Firmware Pack here: viewtopic.php?p=94848#p94848
Thanks again, Marty. You and the rest of the crew here deserve all the kudos. You're all amazing!!!

I'm getting blocked on all the links I have tried in the first post of this thread. This is just happening in the last few days. Anyone else getting this, or is it just me? Looks like the hosting provider for makemkv.com is intercepting the requests. The resulting page appears to be in Russian.

Hello all

I flashed the HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BH16NS55 1.02 (printed on the Label )with the Firmware update for BH16NS55 (Ver. 1.05)
The flash goes wrong and now it show BH16NS40_boot.
i wish to reflash it wir the HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BH16NS55 1.02 Firmware.
i have downloaded the sdf flasher 1.20 and the downgraded enable firmware 2.0 files.
But when i start the flasher and select the drive HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BH16NS55 1.02 and the firmwareDE_flash_HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BH16NS55_1.02.bin.
now i choose the Recovery drive.
and now clicking on start.
and Nothing.
the flasher wont work.
Win7 x64 sp1. or win10 pro x64 20h2
i tried the asus flasher but i get an error update failure 5.
any help welcome.

I just wanted to say thanks for putting together such a comprehensive and easy-to-follow guide for which drives to use and how to flash them. I was able to get a BU40N from Amazon and easily use the GUI sdftool to put the 1.03 MK firmware on it (it actually came with 1.01 so no encryption was involved).

Also, even though I got my own drive and did the flashing myself (and it wasn't particularly hard), if I had to do it again, I'd buy one from one of the sellers here. I thought I'd save a few bucks doing it myself but it really was a false economy. Between waiting a week for the drive to get here, having to buy a slim ODD mount kit and adapter cables (that I ended up not even being able to use because the kit was for a 12.7mm drive but the BU40N is 9.5mm), and finally ending up buying an external enclosure anyway, I easily spent what, e.g., Billycar11 is charging. That price looks like a big chunk to spend all at once but when you add up all the nickel-and-dime crap you need to use this drive, it comes out about the same.

Has anybody ever gotten this error from the sdftool?

Code: Select all

C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV>sdftool -d E: flash -i D:\flash\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600-212005081010.bin

Unknown command

Command produced error code 0x8fffffff

C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV>sdftool64 -d E: flash -i D:\flash\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600-212005081010.bin

Unknown command

Command produced error code 0x8fffffff
I have the below drive and am trying to flash it so that I may enable LibreDrive:

Code: Select all

OS device name: E:
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WH16NS60
Revision: 1.03
Serial number: <snip>
Firmware date: 2120-05-08 10:10
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 76
I also tried the GUI tool but it crashes, likely due to this unexpected output.

For anybody who runs into the same problem, I was using the wrong command. The proper command for me was:

Code: Select all

makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d E: rawflash enc -i "D:\flash\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600-212005081010.bin"
Thanks

You have encrypted firmware. Add "enc"to your command or check the box in SDFtool Flasher.
Cheers :D

From what I can tell, I don't think the latest firmware for the ASUS BW-16D1HT is encrypted since it was released in March of 2019. I'm just confirming this. Being that LG has still been updating/upgrading their firmware since then and this drive is designed by LG, I'm surprised and puzzled that ASUS hasn't continued to update/upgrade the firmware for this drive.

I had a disc explode in my drive and now my drive is done. Won't read anything. Never had that happen before but the drive was old and served me well over the last couple of years.

I need a new internal drive. I see there are deals for $60 on the WH14NS40 is that a good replacement drive for ripping UHD movies. I don't mind paying extra for something solid but I do want an internal 5.25 drive.

Hello! I just got an ASUS BW-16D1HT that has the 3.10 fw and I used the 3.10MK fw to flash it. I mistakenly flashed it using the "enc" command line as if it was encrypted. I then realized it wasn't encrypted and I flashed it again using the "rawflash" command line. After doing this second flash, the drive is now able to read and rip UHD discs. Even though I can rip the UHD discs now, I'm just looking to confirm that everything is fine and I didn't damage the drive. I would appreciate anyone's comment, this was the first time I flashed a drive.

Thanks!!

Hey Billy and all,

I did the original hex hack Mike posted two years ago on my WH16NS60 and got it to 1.00. I see you recommend
WH16NS60 on any Firmware directly to > WH16NS60 1.02MK
Are there any advantages to 1.02MK over 1.00DE?

My guesses according to these MK properties from Mike:
Possible firmware improvements
WH16NS60 1.00DE should have all the vendor commands but maybe not
Inapplicable - WH16NS60 is allowed to read UHD discs
Probably but irrelevant - 1.00DE may still have the checks preventing firmware downgrades but it's the base firmware anyway
Inapplicable - "encrypted" downgrade check
The MK firmware has the following properties:
Made from the latest available official firmware.
Re-enabled vendor commands to update microcode in memory.
Re-enabled ability to read UHD discs (if drive was capable, and disabled in firmware).
Removed firmware downgrade check (if present in firmware).
Removed firmware "encrypted" downgrade check (if present in firmware).
No other changes.
Cheers
