Post by Mathematics » Wed Apr 09, 2025 8:49 pm

Apparently it's "hit or miss" in trying to get the Verbatim 43888 drive with the Pioneer hardware, but I just wanted to let people know that today, April 9, 2025, Amazon sent me a Verbatim drive with the following:

I already have an LG and Pioneer drive but I was hoping to get another Pioneer. Oh well.

Can you please share the Amazon link?
Also, you wrote that you were hoping to get one with Pioneer hardware, but if you did, wouldn't you have an issue with the new Pioneer firmware?

Thanks.

I read on other posts that the sought-after drive was already flashed and ready-to-go. Unfornately, that didn't happen to me and I'm not going to try anymore. I'm just sticking with what I have now and hope that my drives outlast this drought of 4K capable Pioneer drives. In time, I'm sure this will be a thing of the past, and ripping UHD movies will be as easy as ripping CDs.

To future-proof my media ecosystem, I may purchase another Pioneer drive from sellers here and on eBay.

I got the exact drive with the odd 2124 firmware date. It will not backup a 4K. Is it possible to flash this drive? From other posts it seems once it's on a newer firmware you can't go back.

Yes, you have the BU40N. There are no more 43888's containing Pioneer drives. They are all now containing LG BU40N drives inside.
Cheers :D

Mine arrived yesterday. Same thing. BU40N. I thought I'd researched it well, but I hadn't come across this site yet. That said, flashing the drive with the 1.03 here I was able to get it working yesterday. However, I thought I'd give you a heads up in advance. I had so much trouble today with hash errors. Turns out the drive is insanely sensitive to wobble. Since it was vibrating through my desk yesterday, I put a soft, neatly folded rag under it today to quiet it down. Tried some new discs and kept getting those hash errors. Eventually I came back to the discs that worked yesterday and even THEY too were getting those errors... The link here suggested the drive might be failing, but I eventually discovered removing the rag and putting directly on the desk again, suddenly the errors were gone. Keep in mind this was a very flat neatly folded rag with the same desk under it, but i guess it was just enough to screw it up. So. Make sure to place it on a hard surface without padding.

Mine arrived today, also a BU40N, I used the SDF tool to write the 1.03MK firmware

Code: Select all

mk-firmware-pack-20200720.zip -> /MK/old/HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin
I'm calling out the path here because I'd seen some threads that said install "1.03MK", and I've seen a couple of people asking where to find it. This worked first time for me.

I'm getting 6.0X speed with it, so very happy thus far.
