Being a noob I can't PM for now. Will just post my response here in that case. I do think that drive you suggested is fine and would work as spare. I go the box new back then and right off the bat the dvdrw that came in it was bad. Spoke to ASUS and they offered up a refurb to replace the whole computer when all that was bad was the dvd drive. Finally decided to by a replacement and this time I bought a bluray drive. For some reason it keeps disconnecting from the machine when I insert a disc and I have to tap on it to get it to come back. Really not something I wanna trust. I checked the wiring inside for power and sata and both check fine with a multimeter.
With that I do use several external drives already but want to keep the main machine whole. That is why I asked about the pioneer drive. I have had so many lg drives and panasonic and have found them to not really hold up well as I would have liked. Thanks for trying to help.

Even though it is a desktop computer, it appears to use a slim form factor optical drive. If I understand the OP correctly, they want to replace their internal drive with one that works, preferably a Pioneer drive.
Generally speaking, the slim form factor drives are all the same size. The one Coopervid pointed out, while it does come in an external enclosure, has a slim form factor optical drive inside the enclosure. You could keep it in the enclosure to use it that way or remove it from the enclosure and install it in your PC. Verbatim does not make any optical drives; they buy them from a vendor and put them in an enclosure with their logo silkscreened onto it. In this case, Coopervid is saying the drive inside the Verbatim enclosure is a Pioneer UD03.
Furthermore, Coopervid says it can be flashed to think it is a Pioneer UD04 model and thus be able to rip 4K UHD discs.
